Visiting Istanbul? Do NOT Stay In Sultanahmet (Do This Instead)
Everyone tells you to stay in Sultan Ahmed when you visit Istanbul. It is close to the Blue Mosque Sophia. It seems like the perfect option, right? Well, not really. As a local raised in this city, I’ve seen too many travelers regret staying here, including my American friend Kimberly. In this video, I’ll show you four reasons to skip Sultan Ahmed and two better neighborhoods where you will get a way more local and authentic experience. But stick around because later I’ll also tell you when Sultan Ahmed really actually makes sense. Sultan Ahmed is the most famous area in Istanbul. It is where you will find the Blue Mosque Ayas Sophia and all big landmarks. But here is the truth. Staying here might actually ruin your trip. And I’ll tell you why. You are living in a trist version of Istanul. Nobody really lives here in Sultan Ahmed. It’s not where Turkish people hang out or build their lives. It’s more like open air museum. Sure, the wheels are beautiful, but this isn’t really stumble. Everything here looks super tourist designed. Shops have boards made to attract tourists, not Turkish people. Well, that’s a usual scene in Sutan. You see a lot of tourists are waiting in long lines. Everywhere is tourist. You barely see Turkish people. Even the shopkeepers, they speak English to me because they think I’m not Turkish. You will even find souvenirs or decorations that try to look Turkish, but they feel fake, far away from the real Turkish feeling. Even the workers in many shops and restaurants are from other countries, let alone finding locals hanging out here. It just doesn’t feel like a neighborhood anymore. You are paying trist prices for everything. Let’s be honest, if you see a menu in five languages, it’s probably not a place where locals eat. And if the prices are in euros and dollars, that’s a big red flag. You won’t see that in real local spots anywhere else in Stambul. If you ask a Turkish family or a group of friends if they ever come to Sultan Ahmed to eat, you won’t find one who says yes. Locals avoid these places because they know it’s overpriced and not worth the quality. A meal that cost $10 in a local area could be double or triple here. Even basing things like water or tea cost more. You are not just paying more. You are paying for tourist version of Turkish food, not the real thing. Consistent tourist harassment every day here starts with someone trying to sell you something. And it is not just annoying. It can totally change how you feel about Turkish hospitality. It’s not personal, it is business. But still, as a Turkish, honestly, that part makes me a bit sad because we are actually famous for our hospitality and kindness. I really want to see you experience our true face, the real way Turkish people welcome guests. But in Sultan Ahmed, it’s hard to feel that when every greeting is followed by a sales pitch, it doesn’t feel warm anymore. It feels like pressure. And that’s not what Turkey is about. That at night, if you stay here, you’ll miss Istanbul’s energy after dark. And trust me, that’s one of the best parts of this city. Sutaname shuts down early. After sunset, shops close, lights go off, and the streets go quiet. It feels empty. But IstAnul is famous for something. It never sleeps. In the other neighborhoods, the night is just starting. People are outside drinking tea, laughing, listening to street music. You’ll miss that if you are stuck in a silent hotel room. And that energy, that night life, it’s something you really don’t want to miss. Now, let me be fair. Sultan Ahmed can make sense for you. If you are here just for a day or two, if you want to walk to every landmark, if public transport feels overwhelming, then maybe it’s a smart choice. But if you want more local experience, let’s look at other options. We are passing over the Golden Horn, leaving the old city behind, and entering Baolu, the modern heart of Istanbul. This is Bolu. If I were visiting my own city, I would stay right here. Why? Because this is where Istanbul lives. The energy is real. Locals, students, artists. It is a true mix. Amazing food, not just for tourists. Location is perfect. Metro runs everywhere. Hotel prices are better. And the shopping fixed prices. No need the Hegel. Still historic. You’ve got Galata Tower and old churches. It’s not just modern bus. The only downside it can be loud and yes a bit hilly but this is what gives you those boserous views. I’ll give you a tip. Stay near Galata Tower. It’s the perfect middle point. I love the energy here in Beaolo. This street is like small semary of Istanul. Look, it’s so lively. Lots of restaurants around. These are the places where I eat at. You see the a lot of restaurants especially these are making really good dessert. The energy imagine you are sitting here having your coffee seeing the Galata Tower right here. I truly love it. Now if you want to go even more local cross the water and stay in Kaduko. This is the really stumble where I meet my friends relax and eat. Food is amazing and cheap. The vibe is relaxing and no one tries to sell you something. The night life here is real. Local bars, live music, and young crowd. Accommodation, bigger rooms, and better prices. Sure, you’ll need to take the fair ride to go to the old city, but it is just 20 minutes ride. That 20 minute ride is highlight of your trip. Most tourists never make this site. This is exactly why you should do it. It’s really stumble here. This is the price that you cannot find in European site. most of the time, especially in the old town. This soup is not even $1. Rice and salads, $25 each. So, this is the local prices in Kodico. I cannot hear English here. Truly local. [Music] Here is a quick guide to help you decide. If it is your first time and you want to walk everywhere, Sultan Ahmed. If you want culture, locals, and don’t mind transport, Kadik. If you want both authentic city and accessibility, Baolo. So that’s why Sultan Ahmed might not be the best place to stay and two neighborhoods that will give you the realistul experience. Have you stayed in any of these places? Let me know in the comments which you would pick. And if you want more local tips about Istanbul, hit like, subscribe, and check out our neighborhoods playlist right here. So, see you in the next
Thinking of staying in Sultanahmet on your Istanbul trip? You might want to think again.
It’s close to all the big landmarks — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace — but that convenience comes with trade-offs that many tourists don’t realize until it’s too late. In this video, Saygın shares 4 key reasons why Sultanahmet might actually hurt your experience, based on years of local insight and real conversations with visitors who stayed there and regretted it.
From overpriced restaurants and tourist-only shops to quiet, empty streets at night, Sultanahmet can feel more like a museum than a real neighborhood. You’ll also hear about two much better options — Beyoğlu and Kadıköy — both full of local life, real food, great transport, and the kind of energy that makes Istanbul unforgettable.

I stayed about 7 min walk to the Mosques in Sultan Ahmed and it was super nice. Even quiet at night. Better than other parts of Istanbul. I hated the area of Taksim Square. Crowded and overwhelmed.
I'm coming from the US to Istanbul in 2 weeks
Thank you for your videos, they're very helpful for someone like me planning to travel there for the first time. People from Turkey, i need advice. is November a good month to visit the country? i don't mind a bit of cold but would i still be able to experience the joys of Istanbul, Cappadocia and Antalya?
many thanks for the tips. Could you also feature where to buy cheap clothes in Kadikoy and the European side or better where locals go?
I saw "Nar suyu" juice, one glass for 80 lira ones walking in Sultanahmet year 2023 lol. But other then that prices are too high in Türkiye. The prices for meat based food or prices for a slice of cake 280 lira or so, from a nice cafe is same exact type of prices seen here in north europe. So we don't get much for our money when visiting anymore:/
We stayed at Beyoglu in June 2025… best olace close to all public transport
His videos are so informative and exciting to watch. But is there a video on a tour of the "Walls of Constantinople?" Or ruins? Any suggestions on a tour of these walls? … Thank you!
I usually stay in Fatih. It feels much more like a residential area and we eat where the locals eat.
Istanbul Sultanahmet area has a much more historic Ottoman feel to it. Beyoğlu has a much more modern European feel to it which has sadly lost its ottoman roots with all the night partying etc.
If your intension is to go to Istanbul for the parties and nightlife then beyoğlu may be for you. But if you want a more traditional authentic Ottoman feel in your time in Istanbul then I recommend Sultanahmet. It's true that food prices etc are expensive but you can walk like 10-15 mins outside of Sultanahmet towards fatih district and the food will be much cheaper. Also true that heavy modern night life with drinking and parties etc is not as dominant in Sultanahmet but if it was then that would ruin the ottoman feel to the area. Hearing the call to prayer 5x a day in Sultanahmet is an experience in itself and well beats the party night life imo.
We stayed at Aspera Golden horn hotel in Shishane Beyoglu in July 2023 and it was the perfect location! A 5 minute walk from Galata and also a 5 minute walk to Istiklal street and the metro station was right below our hotel.
Just back and stayed in this area..I will admit I did not research a lot but never again, very expensive and hassled too much, I would stay in Kadikoy area for sure.
All countries that have tourist attractions, they should give better experiences that will attract more revisit and word of mouth of positive experience, for more tourism’s ! The organized system should be placed, the Turkish tourism board should do better jobs , because this is great for economy !
I visited Istanbul 4 times..first time we stayed in Laleli, because i was with agency. All the other times i stayed in Beyoglu, close to Galata tower. I love vibe of Beyoglu and i will always stay there.
Super excited about my upcoming trip to your country.
Already planned to stay in the Asian side prior to seeing your video but I'm glad you confirmed it.
I'll be there in the first week of October. 😎🤙🏽
I visited Istanbul last year and didn’t enjoy my visit because of the street vendors. Once I went to Kas, Turkey I fell in love with Turkey. Next time I plan to stay on the Asian side of Istanbul. Great video.
More than 15 times in Istanbul, even the first one, 34 y ago, I stayed in Taksim. At that time Beyoglu and Galata tower surroundings were a "desert" for hotels and restaurants. Even Taksim is now unrecognizable compared to what it was. Once stayed in Sultanahmet, another in Nisantasi, but I prefer Taksim
Good information bro i am coming 1st october
We were there last week, we did two nights in Sultanahmet, flew to Cappadocia for two nights, then stayed in Beyoğlu. We enjoyed both for different reasons. I would definitely stay in Beyoğlu next time and just visit Sultanahmet by tram (easy metro, 4 stops!).
Wer do u suggest we go which area I'm coming to istanbul on 23rd September please advise
I stayed in sultanahmet and I don't regret it. I visited Beyoglu too. For me, next time, I prefer staying in Karakoy.
Its a bit noisy but has some good points … Now that istanbul has such good public transport ..stay further out , its cheaper and nicer
Kadikoy seems like a nice place to stay at! However, is it possible to easily cross over to the Eastern side from Kadikoy without taking a ferry? I have terrible sea sickness and doubt I'd be able to survive the ferry ride
My favorite place is Kadıköy
It’s the same in most major cities. I am from New York City and now live near Washington DC. Times Square is full of tourists, not locals. The National Mall in DC is full of tour groups. These are places that everyone should visit….once. They are fun to see but don’t represent the true vibe/heart of the cities.
That being said, we are coming to Istanbul and staying in two different hotels. The first is in Sultanahmet because it’s convenient. We will be there two nights. The next hotel is in Beyoglu.
How you can move from Karakoy to Kadikoy during the night?
good info. alas the tour put us in sultanahmet
I am coming to Istanbul next month; Will be staying at hotel in Sultan Ahmet, overlooking the blue mosque; but for eating & shopping I will go to other places you mentioned.
Thanks for your nice tips and vivid descriptions.
Best regards from Canada
Thanks!
We stay in kadikoy been 15 times best place to stay
Thank you brother. I've been to Turkey 4 times and always stayed in Sultanahmet. I'll be coming in a few weeks and planning on staying in Kadikoy. Do you have a video or guide of all the best places to eat in Kadikoy?
Should I stay in Karakoy or Kadikoy? Coming in Dec for 3 or 4 days
Merhaba!! Im knew to your channel and first of all, I really like your videos!! I have been to Istanbul two times and Ive stayed near Galata! And I completely agree with you as it is the perfect spot for any direction of your itinerary! On my second visit even made friends with locals who cooked amazing meals and I felt very welcomed every morning for the best menemen ever!
The funniest part is that I almost skipped Sultanahmet as it is soooo crowded all the time. I only been to Cistern Basilica as it was my dream to see this amazing place with my own eyes. And after I left this district because as you’ve mentioned it became too loud and too crowded… Maybe on my third visit I’ll wake up at 6am and go there just to walk around.
Have a good day!!!
Runaway inflation. Collapsing currency. Stifling interest rates. Barred from entering the EU. No hopes for career advancement.
= Not a good place to live for the local population.
But they can still hope to entice tourists to visit from Russia.
How about bakirkoy?
How to travel to Hagia Sofia from Beyoku, near Galata tower ? tram T1 ? Thanks
What hotels in Beyoğlu?😊
I've been to Istanbul 3 times, and this video explains everything perfectly!
I DONT AGREE WITH YOU, SULTAN AHMET IS JUST PERFECT
Kadikoy is the best. But getting more touristic in the night/ evening. It' s not that unknown and the price is maybe a bit better. But not as years ago. Kadikoy is a way better place to stay……And beautiful……… If you wanna go to a untouristic place…. Go to Levent 😅
Even if is the most expensive area in istanbul we like to stay there because of the beauty of history, the mosque, aya sofia. We do feel a good spirituality there hamdulilah ❤
I'm planning to visit Istanbul next month, as a couple it will be our 1st time visit to turkey, ,I like your videos, it's provided me lots of information. Thanks
I should see this video before my trip.
Hi! We came to Istanbul and stayed in Sultanahmet. Yeah maybe it makes sense to stay in Beyoglu 😊
Thank you for the tips! My first and only trip so far to Istanbul was to Sultanahmet for five days. Loved it! But I'm willing to try out Kadikoy the next time I visit, but can I get around easily there if English is not spoken?
I prefer mosque and Muslim shops as opposed to bars and drinking. If someone wants to drink go European country. Why would some go turkey for bars.
Stayed in Sultan Ahmet and Besiktas on my first trip. It was beautiful. Plan to stay at Üsküdar on the next trip. Looking forward eagerly.
