Unwritten Rules of Las Vegas Every Tourist Should Know
Hey there fellow travelers. Mark here with Voltage World. Today we’re here in lovely Las Vegas. Today we have for you are some of the unwritten rules of Las Vegas that you as tourists should know. And I want to start here at the Las Vegas sign and that is you don’t have to wait in this line to take a picture with the Las Vegas sign. I.e. If you just stand right here, you can actually get the picture without those people in it. So, why wait in line for, I don’t know, 20 minutes, 15 minutes for all these people to go through when you can just take the picture on your own. Save yourself the time. Another thing that you should know when you’re coming here, and it’s really unwritten. You’ll see sometimes Elvis impersonator, someone here that’s like, “Oh, take your picture with me.” You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to take pictures with them. It is not required. It’s not a thing cuz they’re going to they want to get paid for that stuff. That is not something you have to deal with as a tourist when you’re here. And if you’re getting harassed, you got people asking you like, “Hey, take a picture with me because I’m a show girl. Take a picture with me because I’m Elvis.” One of the best things I want to tell you, the unwritten rule is if you want people to leave you alone, just say you’re a local. Cuz here’s the thing, everybody could be a local here in Las Vegas cuz everybody from the world comes here and everybody from around the world lives here. So, you can get fantastic food from all over. I mean, we come to Las Vegas to eat Ethiopian food cuz it’s fantastic. But yeah, that little line of, “Hey, man, I’m a local,” will save you so much time when you’re here. Another unwritten yet slightly expensive rule when you come here to Vegas is you literally tip everyone that helps you. Whether it’s the valet that takes your car, if it’s the housekeeping staff that are cleaning your place, when you’re going to restaurants, the people that are bringing your drinks, the buffet, there is going to be tipping. And so I’m going to tell you the unwritten rule is bring lots of singles and fives when you come cuz you’re tipping all the time. So be aware of that. And that includes your housekeeping. If I want to talk about some hotel tips, I want you to know like unwritten rules, there is literally no point to fight about the resort fees cuz you’re staying on the strip, you have resort fees maybe 50 bucks a night, 55 bucks a night. It’s and if you stay off the strip, there might not be any. But if you think you’re going to get away like, well, I didn’t use the pool or the pool is closed while I’m here. They are still going to charge you that resort fee no matter what. So, don’t even deal with it. Sign up online for the emails from the uh casinos and hotels because some on the strip might have times where hey our members don’t have to pay resort fees. So that could be something to help you out or just stay off the strip. They usually don’t have resort fees. So now we’re here in the evening time and some of the unwritten rules about partying here in Las Vegas I want you to know is one yes you can drink in public here. However, you can drink in public if you’re like downtown, you know, Fremont Street Experience over here on the strip. You can drink in public. However, it has to be an open container. So, you’re looking at glasses and open cans. No glass glasses, no glass bottles. You can’t do that. So, remember that. And also, one thing I want you to tell you, you may people always talk about how fun and how crazy they get in Las Vegas. I will let you know this little unwritten rule. The police offers don’t like sloppy drunks. So, if you get sloppy trunks, believe me, the security will kick you out and they won’t let the police know. So, don’t wake up in the morning wondering what happened when you got a little bit too much in you. So, be aware of that. Now, if you’re going to be going out partying with your buddies and you’re going to go to a place that has bottle service, well, one thing I want to know, they’ll tell you the bottle service only $100 a bottle or $200 a bottle. What you have to realize is that $100 or $200 bottles, that’s not the only price you’re going to pay. Usually, these places have minimums and it could be $1,000 minimum. So, you got to drink a lot more or there’s going to be extra service charges on top of that. So, it might only be a $200 bottle, but then you’ve got a $100 in service or something else in there. So, I do want you to be aware of that cuz that is one of those unwritten rules that the $200 bottle service is never just $200 when you’re going out. Now, another thing I want you to tell and it comes to partying here and you’re with your friends and you get a little rambunctious, I got to tell you, you know, like I said, the cops and the security, they don’t deal with the sloppy drunks. But I also want to tell you is don’t mess with the bouncers, the security, cuz they’re kind of like many gods here sometimes, especially the clubs you really want to go to, because they’re the one who decides if you can come in or not or if it’s time for you to go. So, it’s always a good idea to be respectful for them. Now, you’re not necessarily tipping them and things like that cuz they’re not going to let you in for you tipping them. But, I will let you know that it is one of those things. It’s an unwritten rule that you don’t mess with the bouncers. I think if we look at some other unwritten rules about coming here to Las Vegas, one, don’t underell the international food that is here when you are in Las Vegas. There’s so many people from all around the world that come here and have fantastic food. I mean, honestly, for me, Ethiopian food, every time we come to Vegas, we’ve got to get it because it’s so good and you can get it here. But you get so much great international fair. This legit international fair. That’s one thing people never really talk about, but that’s really an unwritten thing about here. Another thing I think it’s an unwritten rule is make sure if you get a chance to talk the locals do because what you don’t realize is that the locals are so friendly and they’re like, “Yeah, we want to make sure you don’t get ripped off. We want to make sure you go to the good place. We want you to help support the local businesses.” And so it’s one of those things you don’t really think about when you meet the locals. They’re so pumped about their city and they’re so friendly that you end up loving being here. I mean, we’ve had fans come up and say hi. We’ve had people that were like, “Hey, you’re here in Vegas. Where what are you going to eat tonight?” We’d ask. And I’m going to tell you, don’t be afraid to ask the locals, but also don’t be afraid to ask the like waiters and bartenders, wherever you’re going around, because they’re in the food service industry. They kind of know and the hospitality industry. They kind of know what’s going on, what are the good places, and they’re really good for the recommendations, and they’re not making millions of dollars. So, they’re giving you good places that the locals eat at that’s affordable and super tasty. Another, it’s not necessarily unwritten rule, but a rule that a lot of tourists forget when they come here to Las Vegas. Don’t think that the cabs and the ride shares like the Ubers and lifts can come pick you up at the front of a hotel or the front of some place when you’re on the strip. When you’re on the strip, the casinos usually have a designated ride share area. And the unwritten rule for those casinos is to make that ride share spot as complicated as possible to get to. So like if you’re going to Caesars, you have to walk and find the valet parking and then the ride shares by that. So like going to Caesars, go to the form shops and go from there cuz that’s a lot easier for you and for the drivers. But yeah, just the frustration of trying to get your ride from some of the uh casinos can be a bit much. But if you’re off the strip, it’s not a really big deal. But just something I thought you should probably know. So let’s talk about some of the unwritten rules of going to the casinos. And I think one thing you need to realize is you never ever ever touch another player’s chips or their cards because one, people feel that you’re cheating if you do that, but also it’s just not something you do and you can get in a little bit of trouble for the people that are playing. So just make sure you keep your hands on your own cards and on your own chips cuz otherwise bad things can happen. Okay. Another thing I think is important is uh don’t just hop into a game if you don’t know how to play it. look around and see if there’s more like a training table where they’re going to help you learn how to play the game because believe me, the casinos want you to learn how to play so you come and you play and they can make money off of you. That’s one of the things you got to think about, right? So, be aware of that. So, don’t just hop in because what happens if you don’t know how to play the game, you kind of slow the game up and that’s going to upset the players that are there and they’re going to go, I don’t want to play at this table. I’m going to walk away. The casino does not like that. So, what I would recommend is watch people play so you can kind of see how it works and stuff. And you can ask the dealers how to play that. You can’t you can’t ask for like strategy, but you can ask, hey, what is the how do you play this or how do you do that? They can give you like the here’s the technical things that people do. They can kind of teach you that way, but you don’t want to do that on a high stakes table or a high, you know, minimum table when people are getting upset and they’re playing for a lot cuz that can cause some trouble. Learn on the side tables before you go to the big boy table. All right? So, be aware of that. And when you’re looking at those tables, make sure you know the rules of the table. Is it one that has a 3-2 payout? Or is it a 65 payout? Because winning big can be very different at a 3-2 table versus a 65 table because the payout is that much better at a 3-2 table versus a 65 payout table. And when you’re playing slots, the machines, I want to tell you this, there are so many machines out there. You’re going to be able to find them. Not a big deal. But if you’re thinking, “This is what I want, but I got to go to the bathroom, so I’m going to lean my chair up on it or I’m going to put my drink here.” I’m going to tell you though, back in the day that meant, hey, this is re reserve for me. That was an unwritten rule to save it for that person. Nowadays, people are not going to let you save your seat. So, what I recommend is cash out, get your stuff, move on, cuz there actually are people that are watching the slots that are getting played and they like to hop in after that slot’s been played to kind of like, oh, if they didn’t win, maybe the winding is going to come. So, do be aware of that. So, even if you think you’re saving it for yourself, just know someone might come in and snake it. So, do be aware of that. It sucks, but I’m just letting you know. Now, let’s talk about some of the street unwritten rules. One thing is jaywalking. If you’re going to jaywalk, prepare to die. Okay? I’m just letting you know that jaywalking in Vegas, especially on this trip, is a no-go thing. Now, the cops can ticket you and it can be a significant ticket if you do jaywalk, especially going across, you know, Las Vegas Boulevard. But in general, it’s more the safety thing you just don’t do. So, you want to take those escalators and do the walkways over. That’s nice. However, another unwritten rule of Las Vegas is that well, you’re not going to love it, but uh those escalators break down quite a bit. And it’s not that the workers aren’t trying. I mean, I I give it to the guys and gals that are working on those escalators to make them work all the time. But the fact is, you got tourists having a good time and sometimes things happen and they can clog up the escalators. And so, don’t be surprised if sometimes you don’t have an escalator going. And so, if you are someone with limited mobility, that is something to be aware of. So, look for the elevators. They might be working, but we had the other day we were over by, you know, we’re over by the Venetian and their elevators were broken and a couple of the escalators were broken, too. So, just be aware of it that it is unwritten rule that at least one or 10 of the escalators will be broken while you’re here. But, I give props to the guys. Like I said, I give props to people working trying to keep them going cuz it’s not easy. Now, when you’re walking on the strip, you’re going to see some slappers. These are the guys that are like slapping the cards and stuff. And the cards are for strip clubs or or services, other kind of services, let’s say. I will say if they hand you one, just take it and walk away. Don’t be like, I didn’t want this at all. Don’t make a scene because it doesn’t matter. Just take it and keep going because you getting all indignant is not going to change anything. So the unwritten rule, just grab it, walk away, throw it away next time you get a chance to just have a heads up. I would not leave it in your pocket for later cuz you might get questions back home. Now, another unwritten rule is when you’re walking around, whether you’re in Fremont Street or you’re going around Bolt Lake, Las Vegas Boulevard, anytime pe someone wants to take a picture with you or wants you to take a picture of them, it is never for free. You know, you’re going to see people like dressed up as, you know, show girls. You’ll see people dressed up as Elvis. You’ll see people dressed up whatever. They’re going to get paid. Like, if you go to Las Vegas sign, sometimes there’s someone there. I’ve seen where people dressed up as as Elvis trying to get pictures with people. Oh, yeah. I should do that. No, you don’t have to pay the people cuz you’re not taking their picture. If they hop into your picture, you’re definitely not paying. But if they’re like, “Oh, come take a picture.” And then you take a picture with them, you do pay them. Okay? That’s the way it is. But, uh, the unwritten rule is negotiate beforehand. Cuz if you don’t, they’re going to say something crazy like, “$100 for a shot for each of the two of us that are in the picture.” No, no, no, no, no, no. So, what are your unwritten rules of Vegas? Let us know in the comments below so other travelers can know the inside and out before they come here so they can have a great time without breaking any of those rules. Anyway, I wish you all the best. I’ll say bye from here in Las Vegas. And a special thank you to our members on YouTube and our patrons on Patreon who help make travel videos like this possible. Is Vegas as dead as people are saying it is?
😂🤣😅
Hey Mark, awesome video and you should probably think about moving to Vegas
Vegas used to be fun, before it became a playground for the rich only.
How to avoid resort fees, Don't go to to Las Vegas.
Unwritten rule: You will see uncashed or abandoned tickets from slot machines like $0.05 here and $0.17 here etc. Its actually illegal to pick those up even though its free money. Haven't heard of anyone getting in trouble for this but its actually against casinos' policies (and also Nevada law). Under NRS 465.070, you cannot “claim, collect or take … money or anything of value … from a gambling game … without having made a wager.”
Local here. Don't stay on the strip. Stay downtown because Fremont is way more fun and way more economical. If you're hungry get to Chinatown so much variety and high quality at awesome prices.
Accurate stuff from Mark….my editorial: why would anyone bring their young family to the Vegas strip? Regardless of the resorts’ marketing, the strip is an adult playland and should stay that way! Let the performers stay, and keep the children away!
….Also, and I can’t stress this enough, NO WATER BOTTLE REFILLERS
Great video as always, Mark!
Those resort fees . it's a racket. Mark and Jocelyn, as always great tips . Love you guys 😁😁 Jim and Harriet
Rule 1. You don’t talk about Las Vegas. Rule 2. You don’t talk about Las Vegas.
Always pay attention when walking, there is always construction taking place and it's easy to get distracted. You could be walking along the sidewalk one minute the next tumbling in the dirt, because they tore a section of sidewalk out for construction. Also, always check the weather, just because Vegas is in a desert don't think it is always going to be hot, it does snow out there.
As a Vegas Expert at this point. I am curious to see if I agree.
When walking along the Strip, be conscious of those bars that have an open patio on the second or third floor. I have taken a beer bottle to the head when walking past. It's unpleasant.
$10-20 for a street photo is perfectly acceptable. Who cares if they argue. Respect what they’re doing but don’t get bullied.
Great tips! Regarding the ride share area, some casinos (i.e. Aria) have easy to find ride share areas. However, others (I'm looking at you, Wynn/Encore) try to hide their ride share pickup areas in the most obscure locations possible. Why? No clue.
I saw the videos about Europe by that pompous, loud American. They were brimming with prejudice, half-truths, and other attitudes that are so typical of Americans. But that's America for you, where you can make a lot of money off this kind of nonsense. But back to Las Vegas. I visited the city in 1983 and 1993 and avoided it twice more after that. I saw the streets parallel to the Strip. There you could see the MAFA (Make America Fake Again).
Step one, pick a different place.
God bless you with your divorce coming up. We’re so sorry to hear the termination of your marriage so sorry God bless.
No one goes to LV to experience the world. This is the capital of illusion. You go to LV to gamble, see a show, experience glitz. Anything that Mark is trying to sell you other than these things is bull shit. There no locals in LV. They all came here from somewhere else.
So tired of tipping, I don't go any more. Everyone else, have fun!
Best unwritten rule? Stay away from the "Strip".
Why would you? 🤦🏻♂️
Tipping in the US is a national sport and a load of BS, giving extra for doing their job, every US state has some form of minimum hourly rate now. Spent 3 weeks on Japan and they don't expect it or want it, infact they would be insulted.
A video about why you should vacay elsewhere😂😂😂😂😂
Yes! Las Vegas has some of the friendliest people in the country. We locals love tourists and want you to have a great time so you’ll come back. Some of the casinos may have forgotten to value their guests but we have not. Always ask a local for recommendations.
America shows disrespect to the rest of the world so it’s fine to disrespect them back by shitting on their pavements , it’s a new by-law that America loves to live by.
Las Vegas looks empty. This place has too many fees.
What happens if you don't tip everyone who helps you?
Tipping culture in Vegas is crazier than the rest of US. I go to Vegas several times a year, when I check in to hotel even the front desk is looking at me to slip them a $20 (to look for an upgrade), and when you don’t they are not so friendly
I have a friend who cleans houses as a living. I tip her $15.
There are casino game apps: blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat, and poker. There are good YouTube videos on how to play. Play your desired game and treat your fake money balance as a real bankroll. Learn before you go to Vegas!
Best rule is to keep driving through it.
I was there last year. I mean I was solo travelling so I guess I wasn't really in party mode, but just not my vibe. I actually got one of the best nights sleep I've ever had in Vegas and I was in bed by 10pm on a Saturday night! I'd had a helluva day, hungover as hell I have to add. One tip would be stay off the strip. It's all really compact and easy to get around and worst case you get a taxi but there are also buses. That's surely still cheaper than the resort fees which feel a total scam btw.
ALTERNATE title for video:
Reasons not to come to Vegas!
I went to an afterprom party 10 years ago. They had a local casino come in and set up training tables teaching us how to play different card games. That’s also the last time I’ve ever played Texas Hold’Em.
Don’t tip cashiers. Do tip maids.
Go to Tahoe instead 😝
Tanya and Dave from "Let's Turn It Up World "! Yay!
NO ONE IS GETTING A TIP! TOO EXPENSIVE!!!
Biggest rip off..never going back.
They are charging resort fees everywhere now, not just Vegas. Not as high but smaller establishments. If some of my stay is comped I don't mind paying 60 a night to stay in a nice place
As I understand it, the cost for pictures is a "donation" and the amount one pays is entirely up to the individual. The "showgirls" can tell you it will be $100 (each), but legally you only have to give them a buck (to share).
Just dont go to Vegas!!!
If any stranger approaches you and starts talking to you, they’re trying to get money out of you in some way shape or form.
