01 | Würzburg Old Town Walk: What Makes This City So Special?
Hello, friends! 👋 Today, we’re going to explore the fall colors of Würzburg together. Welcome! First, let’s take a quick look at Würzburg. Then, let’s enjoy a pleasant walk through Würzburg’s historic streets. The weather is cool and cloudy; typical November weather in Franconia. Würzburg is a city in northern Bavaria, built on both sides of the Main River. Würzburg’s roots go back to the year 704 AD. In the Middle Ages, it became one of the region’s most powerful bishoprics. Almost completely destroyed during World War II, the city today feels reborn with its UNESCO heritage. ✨👟 Now, tie your shoes and let’s start our walk along the Main River! The bridge we see in the distance is the “Alte Mainbrücke,” or Old Main Bridge. Construction began in 1133. Completed in the 15th century, this bridge is one of Würzburg’s most iconic landmarks. With its 12 statues of saints, the bridge feels like an open-air gallery. This region is famous for Franconian wines. White wines made from Silvaner grapes are a must-try. In Würzburg, the tradition of “Brückenschoppen” is still alive. 🍷 Enjoying a glass of wine on the bridge is a favorite pastime of the locals! From this tavern, with local wines in hand, you can admire the vineyards on Schlossberg Hill… …and enjoy the best of Würzburg. Rising before us is this majestic tower, Grafeneckart, dating back to the 1180s — the remains of a medieval castle. As the city’s oldest surviving tower, it stands witness to Würzburg’s history. Vierröhrenbrunnen was built in 1766. This four-spouted fountain once provided free water to the public. We’re at Sternplatz, which becomes most colorful and lively during the Christmas market. In November, preparations for the “Würzburger Weihnachtsmarkt” begin — a 300-year-old tradition! St. Kilian Cathedral, built in the Romanesque style, began construction in 1040. According to legend, the Irish missionary Kilian tried to spread Christianity in this region. Neumünster was built in the 11th century and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century. Neumünster is dedicated to the city’s saints Kilian, Totnan, and Kolonat, making it an important pilgrimage church. At Marktplatz, the market is set up every morning at 7 and open until noon. It truly is the heart of the city! You can also try “Würzburger Bratwürste” — pork sausages. 😋 “Eine Geknickte mit, bitte!” — meaning “One of the twisted ones, please.” This is Würzburg’s famous twisted sausage! Falkenhaus, decorated in Rococo style in 1751, once won the award for “most beautiful library.” Construction of Marienkapelle, in Gothic style, began in 1377 and took 100 years to complete! Legend has it the church was built as atonement for a murder that took place here. This market with flower stalls, local delicacies, and handicrafts offers a true Franconian experience! Here, you can find Franconia’s famous sausages, homemade jams, and fresh bread. Fresh Franconian vegetables, fruits, and local cheeses make for a colorful market scene! Marktplatz has been Würzburg’s shopping center for centuries, hosting markets since the Middle Ages. Häckerbrunnen was built in 1978, representing winemakers and viticulture culture. Just like the fragrant breads behind the bakery… …Würzburg is full of warm, inviting sights that will make you feel at home! We continue exploring the side streets leading to Marktplatz. The impressive building ahead is Würzburg’s Rathaus, or City Hall. This antique mailbox dates back to the 19th century. One of the details that preserves the historical charm. “Käsekuchen” — Franconian-style cheesecake is a traditional local dessert. I highly recommend trying it. Neubaukirche was built in 1582. A Baroque-style university church. The church was damaged in World War II and faithfully restored in the 1970s. Every May, Würzburg hosts the “Africa Festival,” one of Europe’s largest African culture festivals. Würzburg’s “Fastnacht” carnival takes place in February with colorful celebrations. The carnival is a traditional celebration before Lent. Its origins go back to pagan rituals. Masked balls, live music, and traditional “Krapfen” pastries turn the city into a festival ground! Ahead of us is the magnificent Würzburg Residenz! 🏛️ Built between 1720-1744, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The masterpiece of architect Balthasar Neumann. One of the most important examples of European Baroque architecture. Now, let’s take a short walk in the Residenz’s enchanting palace gardens. On a calm November day, we are enjoying this rare example of Baroque garden art. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981. One of the most significant works of European Baroque. These Baroque gardens complement the grandeur of the palace. Designed in 18th-century French style. The statues in the garden represent mythological gods. Each tells a story! Since 1922, Würzburg hosts a “Mozart Festival” every summer. One of Germany’s oldest music festivals. Not only Mozart but works of other classical composers come alive at this festival. Listening to Mozart’s works in the halls of the Residenz is an unforgettable experience! Johann Georg Oegg was a brilliant blacksmith of the 18th century. He crafted the magnificent iron doors and railings of the palace in his workshop. The statue was made in 1766 by Ferdinand Tietz, reflecting the delicacy of Rococo art. From beneath Ludwigsbrücke, we admire the stunning view of the Main River. The bridge opened in 1895 and has been an important connection between the two sides of the city. The riverside paths are famous for summer boat tours. These boats offer pleasant trips on the Main with views different from Marienberg Fortress. Festung Marienberg! Built in the 13th century, this fortress is the symbol of the city. The fortress, overlooking the Main River, was considered impregnable for centuries. Inside the castle, there is a wine cellar and the Main Franconia Museum. Marienberg Fortress is currently under restoration, so we cannot explore inside… …but don’t worry, we will enjoy the most magnificent view of the city from the courtyard! Autumn… The trees have turned golden, and the leaves spread across the city like a page from a fairy tale. We are walking in a poem written by nature. Würzburg is enchanting at this time of year!
