The 21 Bends of Alpe d’Huez — A Lie We’ve All Believed
Everyone says there are 21 bends on Alpe d’Huez, but I just rode it and I counted more. Way
more. Stick with me because this climb is trickier and longer than most people think.
[Music] Do you think you know all the bends? I’m at the bottom of Alpe d’Huez. I’m going to
do the 21 Virages or the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez. I’m not going for a fast time. I’m going to
document it for you guys. And already I’m spotting something strange. I’m not sure that’s
very accurate. It says four people have been up today. I’ve seen more than four people going up.
Bit strange. Can you even trust the 21 bends? So, how many bends are there on Alpe
d’Huez? Really? Let’s find out as we ride. The first bend is just the beginning.
Wait until you see what’s waiting at the top. Okay, Bend 21,Le vingt et un virages
de l@alpe d’Huez. 11.1% 13k altitude 770 m. 20 more bends to go. This is the Alpe
d’Huez Tour to France climb explained. Each bend has its own story. But are these
all the bends? Keep counting with me. [Music] Wow, still climbing. Garde-en-Oisans and the
sneaky water stop. Somewhere between bend 15 and 13, my camera decided it needed a rest.
But trust me, the road didn’t. Still climbing, still twisting, and every bend
feels steeper than the last. [Music] Bend nine, the best place
to take a breather and snap some photos of the bends you’ve already climbed. Bend seven, Dutch corner. Not very orange
today. Also a perfect water stop. [Music] Then four, feeling like a tour to France rider. Always welcome the applause,
especially at this stage. [Music] Bend two. Nearly there. But
wait, the real surprises are ahead. So, the climb everyone thinks
they know isn’t quite over yet. The twenty One bends of Alpe d’Huez it looks like i’ve got to go through this
tunnel. Does that make 22 ? What’s going on ! Alpe d’Huez extra bends after
tourist finish. Yes. The road continues and the classic 21 bends
stops at the official Tour to France professional finish. But that’s not the
only surprise waiting at the top. [Music] Oh, it’s getting a bit of a mystery now cuz this
is Bend Zero. Bend Zero. What’s going on? Bend Zero. Outdoor has explained for charity rides
like Alpe d’Huzes. It’s another turn that most riders never notice. And there’s still one more
bend before the roundabout finish. Last couple of hundred meters to the finishing line. Arrivee
a 300 m. This looks like a bend to me. [Music] What do you reckon? WTF? I’ve just
done the 21 bends of Alpe d’Huez, but I’ve definitely counted more than
21 bends. What’s going on? Counting the bends of Alpe d’Huez for charity rides or just
exploring, the roundabout bend makes the total 24. If you love climbing French mountains, hit like and subscribe. Check out my other

I rode the legendary Tour de France climb Alpe d’Huez expecting the famous “21 virages,” but what I found was surprising. Extra bends. A bend ZERO. A bend in a tunnel tunnel. And even a final twist before the roundabout finish. So how many bends are really on Alpe d’Huez? Let’s ride and find out.
In this video, I take you from the very bottom of Alpe d’Huez all the way past the tourist finish, through the mysterious extra turns that most cyclists never count. Dutch Corner, Bend 9, water stops, the steep ramps, Bend 0 used during Alpe d’HuZes, and the final roundabout that takes the total up to 24 bends.
This is the real Alpe d’Huez climb explained.
