As evening falls over Colmar, the medieval streets begin to glow with thousands of warm Christmas lights. Colmar is located in the Alsace region of northeastern France near the German border. This historic town is famous for its half timbered houses and perfectly preserved old town. The Christmas markets of Colmar are among the oldest traditions in Alsace. Christmas trading in Alsace dates back more than five hundred years to the late Middle Ages. Back then winter markets allowed villagers to prepare for the harsh winter months ahead. These early markets focused on food tools warm clothing and handmade goods. Colmar slowly became known as a central trading place between France and Germany.
