Colmar Travel Guide – The Best European Christmas Market?

The Colmar Christmas Market, a real winter fairy tale that has been enchanted people for centuries. The old town is glowing, the canals reflect the light of the Christmas stars and yet there is much more to discover behind the scenes than you see at first glance. Hi, I’m Joey, a travel vlogger from Frankfurt and I came here for you to find out what’s really behind those perfect Instagram pictures. Whether this trip is really worth it, what the prices are like and what most tourists never see. That’s what I’m going to show you today. Kolmar is only a three-hour drive from Frankfurt. And if you come from Freiburg in Germany or Basel in Switzerland, you can be here in just 30 minutes. Let’s start with the boring but essential part. We parked at parking place Rapp on Friday evening. We expected the worst, but look how empty the street is and the parking garage costs us only 6,10€ for the whole evening. I’ll tell you more about prices later, because that really surprised me here. You’re right next to one of the Christmas markets that are spread all over the town in the old town. Of course, you can also arrive by train. The station is cute and cozy, has plenty of bike racks and connects Colmar with Straßburg and Basel. At the Christmas market on Playsrap you’ll find selfie spots, food stalls and really beautiful decorations. For children there is extra entertainment. Perfect if you’re here as a family. What’s also interesting, this market is one of the longest running in Europe because it stays open until January 4th, 2026. But make sure to check the dates if you’re watching this video next year to see if it’s still the same in 2027. Wow, even the construction crane was decorated. This is the Christmas market in Petit Vigny, a few minutes from the parking garage, also known as the second Vigny’s. With a huge mailbox station for Santa, children can post their wish lists here and if the address is readable, they even get a reply. Right next to it, there’s a stall with these LED flowers that change color when they get wet. Totally hypnotic and perfect for night shots. This is exactly that mix of traditional Christmas magic and small crazy details that makes Colmar so special. Earlier I said that Colmar is also called a second Venice. And here you see exactly why. The lights reflect in the water, the houses look like something from a fairy tale movie. But of course I can’t hide how insanely crowded it is here. Like on every Christmas market, you shouldn’t let that scare you away. Start talking to people, maybe the evening ends not only with beautiful pictures, but also with a new friendship, or thousands calories more. These are the moments when Colmar feels like a real storybook. No matter what music I put under the video, it’s real. Left and right, you see these old half-timbered houses, crooked, colorful and still somehow perfectly balanced. Many of these houses are several hundred years old and are now cafes, hotels or small shops, but at night they look more like film sets. And that’s what makes this walk so special. We are really just walking to the Ferris wheel, but the way there already feels like a little Christmas story of its own. And this is the square in front of the Ferris wheel. Here Colmar has a completely different vibe again. The Ferris wheel itself is not exactly cheap. 10 euros for 3 rounds and my companion absolutely refused to pretend to be a child. For me that’s a lot of money. But the view over the old town, the lights and the markets is something special. From up there you finally see how the Christmas markets win through the streets and how close everything is together. I don’t regret going on it. But I’d call it a do it once and enjoy it thing, not something you need to do over and over again. Now let’s talk about prices. They really couldn’t be more different. While you pay 10 euros for the ferris wheel, parking is almost as cheap as it gets. Especially compared to other popular Christmas markets in Europe. For food you are in the typical Christmas market range. Crêpes for about 4 or 5 euros, a hot dog around 8 euros and chocolate-covered marshmallows for about 1 euro each. Pretty standard prices, sometimes even cheaper than on many markets in Germany and definitely cheaper than in Switzerland. What surprised me the most were the drinks. You can get mulled wine starting at 2 euros, juices from around 3 euros, for such a famous international Christmas market. That’s really fair. But now let’s talk in the comments. What do you think about the Kolmar Christmas market? Did this travel guide make you want to visit? If you want to see more, you’ll find lots of new travel tips on my channel in the future. And the next Christmas market we will visit is one in Strasbourg. So feel free to leave a like so this channel can grow and keep bringing you great videos. See you next time. Cheerio.
