Welcome to a Christmas fairytale in Cologne, Germany! The Christmas market in Cologne is one of the most famous and beautiful in Europe. Today we’ll see with our own eyes what makes this place so special. While filming at the market, it was crowded. People come here from all over Germany and even from other countries for the festive atmosphere. We’re now at the main market – the Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market. The Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral officially opened in 1995. Before that, Cologne had various Christmas markets, but the location in front of the Cologne Cathedral eventually became the city’s iconic spot. Today, it is one of the most visited Christmas markets in Germany, attracting more than 4 million people every year. Construction of Cologne Cathedral lasted for more than 600 years — it began in 1248 and was only completed in 1880. It is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, with its spires reaching 157 meters. Inside, it houses the Shrine of the Three Kings – one of the most important Christian relics. It also contains Germany’s largest medieval stained-glass window, the 13th-century “Bible Window.” Cologne hosts over 7 major Christmas markets, making it one of the top Christmas destinations in Europe. Each market has a unique identity – from fairy-tale themes to maritime style to traditional craftsmanship. Many stalls focus on local artisans, offering handmade gifts and regional foods not found elsewhere. Each Christmas market has its own unique lighting concept. At the Cologne Cathedral market – warm golden lights beneath the huge 25-meter Christmas tree. At Neumarkt – soft white “star” lights that create a magical glow. In the Old Town – warm retro-style lamps that highlight the charm of the narrow historic streets. We’ll definitely see all of them during our walk. The first Christmas markets appeared in Cologne more than 100 years ago. Although the modern markets took shape in the late 20th century, the tradition of winter fairs in Cologne dates back to the 19th century, when craftsmen sold sweets and festive goods in the city squares. Cologne was one of the first cities in Germany to decorate its streets for Christmas on a large scale. As early as the early 1900s, the city’s main streets were adorned with gas and electric lights – an impressive innovation for that time. After World War II, the Christmas markets became a symbol of the city’s recovery. Cologne was almost completely destroyed, but the tradition of Christmas markets was revived among the very first.
