Phu Quoc Island – Vietnam’s Lost Paradise
Phu Quoc Islands, Vietnam’s so-called tropical paradise. But after just 3 days here, I learned the truth. This beautiful island is turning into
Southeast Asia’s biggest tourist trap. If you’re dreaming of a perfect vacation here, watch this videobefore you book that flight. The trap starts the moment you land. I tried to book a grab for 88,000 dong, but after 20 minutes, nobody accepted. Some drivers accepted then cancelled. Finally, one driver came up to me outside the app offering the same ride for 100,000 dong. I agreed. Short trips are rarely accepted on the app, and drivers prefer taking tourists to places
where they can earn commissions. So instead of driving me straight to my hotel,
he pushed for a stop at Ngoc Hien Pearl Farm. He also said I could exchange money there. When I arrived, staff followed me closely,
making me feel pressured to buy. And at the cashier, the exchange rate was
much worse than the market. I refused! Here’s the truth. Every driver gets a cash kickback of about 100,000 dong per car for dropping tourists here. Pearl prices are two or three times
higher than in Ho Chi Minh City. The sales pitch is relentless. Welcome to Phu Quoc island! The Phu Quoc’s Knight Market
is advertised as a foodies dream. But the first red flag, as you can see,
there isn’t a single tourist around. no prices on the menus. anywhere! Seafood dishes cost three to four times
more than in other Vietnamese cities. A simple coconut water over $3
for something that usually costs 50. Most tourists leave the night market
feeling ripped off and disappointed. This isn’t the authentic Vietnam you see in travelads. If a menu doesn’t show prices,
you know you’re about to get scammed. Nothing that’s exactly what happened. This little cake was the only thing I found at a fair price. This is palm sugar cake. The night market left me unsatisfied, as if I had fallen into a tourist trap with nothing real to offer. And sadly, the same pattern continued
the next day at Phu Quoc’s grandest attractions. Welcome to Sunworld of Phu Quoc!
The mega project in the north of the island. Built by one of Vietnam’s biggest corporations. It comes with a golf course, luxury resorts, and rows of colorful buildings that create a spectacular view. But the moment you step through the gates, what strikes you isn’t the grandeur, it’s the shocking emptiness. Let me take you on a full tour of this place
so you can see what it’s really like. This place should have been packed with people.
But as you can see, it’s not! There’s literally no one here. It’s 8:00Pm right now, but as you can see,
there’s still no one here. Behind me is the street that was once filled with famous spas. This is the price just to watch
a simple cultural show. Unbelievable! And finally, I arrived at what seems to be
the busiest spot on this beautiful island. Every night at 9:30Pm, there’s a cultural performance with music, dance, and a grand water show. It’s advertised as the most spectacular
water show in all of Vietnam. But as you can see, the number
of tourists here is surprisingly small. leaving this place, I had so many questions
running through my mind. A quick search on Google revealed countless
posts on travel forums, where both domestic and international tourists were calling for a boycott of Phu Quoc. because of overcharging, poor service,
and disappointing experiences. That explains why this island saw surge
of visitors just 2 years ago. But this year it’s a completely different story. The next day, I traveled south wondering if tourists preferred this area instead. But once again, the same emptiness, abandoned houses with for rent and for sale signs. Only a handful of shops open, and the few people walking around were engineers and construction workers. At this point, I felt like the soul of the island had been lost. And yet, amid the ghost towns and overpriced traps. there are still places that remind me why I love Vietnam. ‘Truc Lam” Monastery perched above the ocean quiet and serene offers real beauty and peace if you know where to look. And the locals working hard to build bamboo rafts. Show the side of Vietnam that is simple, honest, and genuine. These are the moments that remind me why I love this country. Not the overpriced tourist traps,
but the real culture and the real people. “Phu Quoc” is losing its soul to tourist traps and greed.
But if enough people speak up, maybe things can change. you’ve been scammed or disappointed here,
share your story in the comments. because the truth matters. Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell for more real stories from Vietnam. The truth is always worth sharing.

Is Phu Quoc Island really worth visiting — or is it becoming a tourist trap?
After spending three days on Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, I documented overpricing, commission-driven stops, empty resorts, and what many tourists only realize after it’s too late.
Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, is often marketed as a tropical paradise. But behind the glossy brochures and social media hype, a very different reality is quietly unfolding.
In this travel documentary, I share what I personally experienced on the island — from unlisted restaurant prices and overcharging at night markets, to taxi drivers pushing commission-based stops like pearl farms, and massive luxury developments sitting almost completely empty.
The warning signs appeared the moment I landed. Grab rides were rejected or canceled. Drivers approached outside the app offering higher prices, then insisted on stopping at a pearl farm where prices were inflated and currency exchange rates were far worse than the market. Later, I learned that drivers receive cash kickbacks for bringing tourists there.
At Phu Quoc’s famous night market, menus had no prices, seafood cost three to four times more than in other Vietnamese cities, and many tourists left feeling disappointed. Yet even there, one honest local vendor reminded me that real Vietnam still exists beneath the surface.
The next day, I explored Phu Quoc’s mega tourism projects — luxury resorts, European-style streets, golf courses, and theme parks. What shocked me wasn’t the scale, but the emptiness. Ghost towns, “for rent” signs, and silence where crowds were promised.
And still, beneath the overdevelopment and tourist traps, there are moments of peace — Truc Lam Monastery, local workers building bamboo rafts by hand, and glimpses of the Vietnam I fell in love with.
This video is not about blaming tourists.
It’s about asking an uncomfortable but necessary question: What happens when paradise becomes a business?
📍 Location: Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam

Hello everyone! This video is only a warning about some bad behaviors of a few individuals providing services in Phu Quoc. Specifically, the video talks about Grab drivers at Phu Quoc airport refusing to accept rides with a price under 100,000 VND when you book a car at the airport. And at the same time, the drivers often deliberately lure you to Ngoc Trai Ngoc Hien facility to receive commission. That will waste your time and affect your trip. In addition, the video also mentions that some shops and restaurants at tourist destinations do not have a menu with listed prices. Of course, there are still restaurants and shops with listed prices. I had a 5-day vacation on this beautiful island. There are places and people that disappoint me. However, there are also people and places that make me feel great. You can visit "Bai Sao" at "RACH VEM BEACH". This place is still very wild and not too many tourists. Or you can go to Ham Ninh fishing village, the seafood price here is quite cheap compared to other tourist areas. Phu Quoc in the past has had many cases of ripping off tourists. However, this visit I found things better than before. If you come to Phu Quoc, carefully research the menu prices in the places you want to go and limit your trust in the words of the drivers. Thank you for watching the video. Wish you a wonderful vacation.
I love the sad music and you whinging about everything. You must be great to go out for a drink with!!
I tired of Danang crazy traffic. I prefer to stay in Phu quoc with way less traffic. In Danang everyday people are dying in road incidents. Durign 2 moths I saw / heard of quite of crashes
Many thanks for this video. It helps alot for making vacation plan. Great informative video.
we are going there in a week. I hope the beaches are at least nice.
Was there two weeks ago after two and a half weeks in HCM, Hoi An and Hanoi. Yes everything from Grabs, massages, food is more expensive here. I can’t get my head around the whole south end of the island. Is it built for looks or housing, shops??? It’s like an empty Disney land. We did do Sun World which was fun. Nice sunsets at kissing bridge. Saw the laser water show which imo was pretty bad. Exiting was a nightmare!
Sunsets were beautiful on the West Coast beaches. Thanks for your video.
How do they finance that? Maybe in high season it's more crowded, if not they need to reduce prices or it will dy
visit Phu Quoc on the way to the navy radar station near Thailand long time age, the island nothing but fish sauce factories.
How about the new years and christmas , is it going to be same or do we have morr tourists walkin
3 days not enough……. Wanker! We LOVED it
You sound like a right tight arse .ive been their 6 times and its not expensive at all its about 10% more expensive than most of vietnam because its a island but not as expensive as ho chin mihn
What a Scam Video😢😢😢😢
Phu Quoc is Number 1 in National Geographic
The are some scammers but you are the worst. I am going there 3th time for few weeks. You are totally ignorant, seems like someone pay you for providing not full informations.
You seemed to travel on a tight budget since you focused a lot on prices. As a tourist, if you’re looking for free spots, you shouldn’t expect too much happening there. It also looks like you only explored a few areas of Phu Quoc.
Don't be fooled. I was in 50 country. It's the worst island in the world. Dont loose your precious time and money here. Go to the islands in Thaïlande,Philippines,Indonesia,Malaysia or even Cambodgia. Absolutlely all islands in these countries are 1000 times better by FAR. Yes, there's a fireworks display every night to try and trick tourists. Don't be fooled and keep walking. I came here with the intention of possibly investing on this island, but I just wasted a month of my life.absolutely avoid
Dude we would appreciate if you speak in the video and what do you expect at 8PM on a low season, a super crowd. I don't think this is an accurate info.
I stayed for a whole month. I went everywhere, from north to south, from east to west. My apartment was in Sun Paradise Land. But it's closer to hell than paradise. New World, Phu Quoc City, all the beaches, all the ghost towns. In the undeveloped northeast, it's still okay. But this island has absolutely no soul. It's shameful. Otherwise, I'm going to Da Nang and the north for the whole month of December. Best of luck!
Dont listen to this idiot. I spent nearly a month in Phu Quoc in July and i can assure you that he is talking mostly trash. There are two FREE electric AC Bus routes from the airport to the very north of the island every 10-15min that everybody uses. I used Grab motorbike almost on daily basis and never been asked to go to any shop. Drivers come almost instantly and also deliver grab food. The prices are normal around 25k-40k for a smoothie and 20k-25k for a large coconut. Massage slightly more expensive than HCMC its normal because its an island. Hotels super cheap and many have breakfast included.
Don't go during rainy season and you look and sound like an easy target. You should try doing something else for a living?
how much is rent there
Deshalb kommt auch niemand gerne her. Eine Schande. Ich finde Grand World und Sun City eine Ergänzung für diese tolle Insel.
I mean …really nice beaches… beautiful city …not too much tourists and you play some sad string music over it??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hello! We’ve been staying in Phu Quoc for over a month now. So far, we’ve found that this island definitely has a lot of ongoing construction, as it’s still developing into a major tourist destination. Of course, some places are overpriced, just like in other tourist areas.
Our best tip for everyone is to do deeper research before visiting attractions or eating at restaurants. Overall, we would still recommend Phu Quoc, as it’s not too crowded yet – perfect if you want to relax and experience the local lifestyle.
Enjoy your life in Vietnam, cheers 💓🇻🇳
Look at the dumb people who came here just so they can youtube the scenery.
Phu quoc IS NOT BEAUTIFUL … THE LONG BEACH IS DIRTY AND SMELL EXTREMELY BAD . The natives always arise the price very high when they see a foreigner , this happens in all sense … THAT IS THE REALITY … besides, they are not friendly …. It seems to be friendly but there are not .
I’ve been PQ a handful of times. I have always managed to avoid those big tourist resorts, you know if it was made for tourism it’s going to be a bit lacklustre after a while. I find the old part of town and the various places not too far from the airport far more enjoyable anyway. More to see more to do, and more food choices from local to western cuisine.
Be careful when paying by credit card. Even at a cafe at a 5-star hotel, the staff may scam you. Always receive the receipt and make sure the charged amount is correct.
Thought this was a horror movie
Love the sad violins! I'm planning a Vietnam itinerary, and researching Phu Quoc. Watched a ton of videos. It might be fun for really lazy family stuff and little kids, but I think I'll pass on Phu Quoc.
I lived on PQC for 10 years and left it when it was time to leave.
Hi- thanks so much for the great video. It gave me a lot of good info as I plan a trip to Vietnam. I’m planing my families first trip to Vietnam in April. It’s me, my wife, and two daughters age 11 and 15. We live in New York City, love all kinds of authentic experiences, love Asian food, and don’t like tourist traps. We want to stay in Ho Chi Minh City (or Hanoi) for 2-3 days and then go to a luxury beach resort somewhere to relax and be pampered. I was considering Phu Quoc but your video gives me pause. Could you recommend another destination for us? I was really attracted to the idea of staying in a 5 star resort on the beach with great food for a very reasonable price.
PHQ is an overpriced, over-rated, construction site.
It looks stunning but I am not paying x3 the cost
After hearing what you said, this place looked like Sierra Madre in Fallout to me. A chill ran through me. The island could attract more tourists with its Fallout theme.
I've planned to visit tho island next year after I been in Da Nang.but after I've seen this video I think I have to reconsider my trip there
I feel like phu quoc is a place that corporates just throw money to develop it and hope that it would become profitable in the future. That's why eventhough the project is outstanding aesthetically but somehow bland and souless
