Getaway is Australia’s favourite travel show with wonderful holiday ideas for all tastes and budgets as well as those once in a lifetime, dream destinations. Getaway airs Saturdays 5.30pm on Channel 9.

The French adventure begins in Paris, the city of love, art, and culture. David Reyne started his tour at the iconic Eiffel Tower, taking in the city’s highlights, including the Grand Palais, Champs-Élysées, and the Arc de Triomphe. Aboard the luxurious Scenic Gem, the cruise set sail along the Seine, traversing the beautiful northern French countryside. Stops included Les Andelys, where David sampled pink apple cider, and Lyons la Forêt, a fairytale village nestled in a large forest. Further downriver was the medieval city of Rouen, distinguished by having the second-highest number of heritage-listed buildings in France.

A profound part of the journey was the excursion to the Somme battlefields, a significant site in Australian history. David visited the Australian National Memorial, the Wall of Remembrance, and the Sir John Monash Centre to honor the soldiers lost on the western front. Back aboard the Scenic Gem, the focus shifted to pleasure, with guests enjoying luxurious suites, 5-star dining, and a special L’Amour dinner featuring regional cuisine. The cultural exploration continued in the villages: David toured the house and famous gardens of Impressionist master Claude Monet in Giverny, and explored Auvers-Sur-Oise, ‘the painters village,’ where Vincent Van Gogh created approximately 80 paintings in the last months of his life.

The journey continued south with David Whitehill in Lyon, the gastronomic capital at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers. Founded by the Romans, Lyon boasts charming hidden traboules and the famous Paul Bocuse markets, where David enjoyed local soft cheese and a fresh baguette. Cruising on the Scenic Sapphire, guests benefited from spacious luxury and personalized butler service. Stops included the medieval town of Viviers, whose cobblestone streets and cathedral have remained largely untouched since the 13th century. Further south was Avignon, the gateway to Provence, where David toured the historic centre, including the Pope’s Palace. He later returned to the palace for a prestigious Scenic Enrich gala dinner and concert. Nearby, the fortified village of Perouges, known as a Gothic treasure, provided picturesque movie-set backdrops and the traditional pastry, the galette.

Finally, Catriona Rowntree explored the renowned Bordeaux region, France’s largest wine-growing area, aboard the Scenic Diamond. After touring the vibrant city of Bordeaux, she visited Saint-Émilion, a charming town known for its monolithic church and catacombs, and said to be the origin of the closely guarded macaron recipe. In Blaye, Catriona toured the immense citadel, feeling like she was on a historical movie set. Her journey concluded in the seaside hot-spot of Arcachon, where she tasted the famous, fresh Arcachon oysters and experienced the final rush of sliding down the immense Dune du Pilat, Europe’s largest sand dune. This appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, or joie de vivre, is clearly why France remains the number one travel destination in the world.
