French Riviera Hills: A Scenic Drive Between Saint-Paul de Vence and Vence

A classic short route in the beautiful hills of the French Riviera, connecting the famous medieval hilltop village of Saint-Paul de Vence with the historic town of Vence! The drive between Saint-Paul de Vence and Vence is very short, typically less than 10 minutes (about 4–5 km).

The coastal part of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) has a distinct culture and landscape from historical inland Provence.

Saint-Paul de Vence
Description: This is one of the most famous and picturesque medieval hilltop villages (village perché) in France. Enclosed by stone ramparts built in the 16th century, the town is a warren of cobblestone streets lined with art galleries, studios, and boutiques. It has long been a haven for artists like Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, and film stars.

Key Attraction: The Fondation Maeght, one of Europe’s most significant private collections of modern and contemporary art.

Vence
Description: A larger, more residential town and the seat of a former bishopric, Vence is less overtly touristy than Saint-Paul. It boasts a beautiful, preserved Old Town encircled by medieval walls, but with a more authentic, lived-in feel. It has a rich history dating back to Roman times.

Key Attraction: The Chapelle du Rosaire (Rosary Chapel), a tiny chapel designed and decorated entirely by Henri Matisse (often called the Matisse Chapel), which he considered his masterpiece.
