Epic Views, Failed Hike & the Best Arancini in Sicily | Salina (Aeolian Islands)

Good morning everyone on Salelina Island. Yesterday we took the bike and we went to Polara, the most beautiful spot to watch the sunset. Challenge for today is even more difficult because we are not only taking the bike to a similar route as yesterday. In addition, we are also going on a hike. We will hike on the highest point of this island, which is the mountain that you can see right behind me. Let me show you. We will meet again at the foot of the mountain. So stay tuned. Friends, we have arrived in Vikasa. This is the foot of the mountain where the hike starts. And as the name says, Vikiasa is a church. And what a beautiful one. It’s made out of this, you know, for this region. Typical yellow stone. All right, we start the hike. We have to take this pathway. There there are no signs at all. I’m just guessing from what I saw on Google Maps. Yeah, let’s go. The views are spectacular already because I have on my left side. I see the sea. I see the hills. I have lots of beautiful different kinds of trees and flowers. Everything is so blooming and flourishing. And I have the sound of the birds. It’s like a concert. All right, we came a long way, but we still got a lot to go. What I wanted to show you is yesterday we watched the sunset over there. If you have not seen it, please check that video out. It’s fascinating to see it from this angle. We made it to the first point and you see how beautiful it is. I’m already speechless. You can see the vast open sea. You can see the surrounding islands. The air is so clean, crisp. We have a small snack. We have here a beautiful Italian apple. Of course, classical aranchchini. This is aranchchini with ragu inside. Then we have this beautiful sweet treat. It is made out of pistachio and almonds. And this one as well made out of pistachio. First we start with the aranchchini, of course. Oh, it’s quite heavy. It’s actually the first aranchchini I have on this trip. This one I had to do it. I had to pull the trigger. It’s a fried rice bowl. The rice is more like a a risoto type and it has tomato sauce in it. Ragu meat. Closer shot of the aranchchini. Look at this filling. They did not cheap out on it. They really filled it to the brim. That makes a good aranchchini. Next up, pistachio and almonds. Like glowing green light coming out. It’s crazy how it looks. smells already amazing. It’s very soft. There is a subtle lemon flavor in it. Probably from some lemon zest they put inside. Fantastic. Oh my god. Not overly sweet. So good that I’m turning into a beaver and nagging on the paper. Wow. But good that I only took one of those because I could eat 10 of them easily. Next up, this beauty of a cookie again. Pistachio. Let’s taste test. Cheers. It’s not made out of um almonds, so there is no almonds inside. And through this, the other one has a very heavy almond taste to it. This one has a very heavy pistachio taste to it. From the baking, you’ve got this. It’s not a burnt aroma, but it’s, you know, this slight crunch and the crust you get from the baking. You can taste it. Look at this. Very delicious. So, we had a beautiful lunch here at the Belvadier outlook. I would love to sit here for a while and meditate and take in more of the view, but we cannot waste any longer. We have to go. There is still good chunk ahead of us we have to take. But, uh, before that, I would like to give this 360 right here. spectacular and show you also a preview of the road that is ahead of us. There is the track going up up up. Well, let’s go. All right. This one is a very interesting spot. A little hut. Looking really ancient. Let’s check inside. Let’s close. Oh no. Okay. Sorry. Let’s close this. Having a barbecue here with this view must be insane. And what is this? Like a small shelter. And the road there ends. And that sums up this spot. Huh. This path right here which is very narrow. Wow. It is shorter but more demanding. And the other way that is easier but takes more time. Oh, but I think this one is worth it because the views here unique and we love a challenge. And this is a challenge actually. Let’s see if we make it. I don’t know if that is a good idea or not. I need to capture this moment. Can you see the church down there? This is where we started. And this pathway I took is crazy difficult, very exhausting. The views, however, this is insane. You can see so far into the distance. Look over there. Wow. But I think I have to return. I don’t know where this road is leading. And I don’t see an end to it. This is crazy. All right. As you can see, back down again at the church. The path I choose was actually too difficult. That was an experience. Very personal one. Barely standing on a small rock fighting to not slip. And to the top of the mountain possibly next time. And now I will hop on the bike. We will go to a very famous location. We say goodbye Ari for now. Yes. Let’s continue our journey. Now from Verde Kiaro we passed Lenny and we see down there our final destination Reinella. That is the small village where we will have the famous Granita. And what a beautiful outlook this is because here we are not only seeing Linella, we see in the distance another island and also the part where we are coming from over there. And we have pesto. Okay. >> Okay. And lasagna with inside. Okay. Tomato sauce and cheese. Okay. >> Okay. This is the squid. >> Wow. >> Okay. >> Okay. It’s a wonderful cake. Wow. inside fig. >> Oh, I love fig. Okay, >> so we made our first order. Actually, I came here for something sweet, but I could not resist the lunch they had. So, I made up a plate. Unexpectedly, we have our second aranchchini of today for today. This one seems to be special. You know, the lady really insisted on taking this aranchchini instead of other dishes. It seems to be a very special one with capers inside. So, look at this beautiful plate we have here. Octopus salad. the other dish, the broccoli and the other cheese. And I’m so ready to dig in. So, we start with the most fascinating one, this octopus salad. Let’s taste how fresh it is. I’m going to take here a little bit of octopus, some carrots. First bite. Very good. Very fresh. The octopus is really delicious combination with these carrots, some olive oil, some capers as well. It’s a really fresh salad. Look at this beautiful dish. >> Fantastic. Wow. Wow. Wow. Next up, we have to try the other. I will take a straight up bite out of it. Cheers. Fantastic. Wow. Wow. I’m speechless. This one is insane. And I was hesitating to pick this aranchchini because I already had one like 1 hour ago, but this is on another level. Wow, look at this cheese pool. >> What kind of cheese is it inside? >> Uh, mozzarella cheese and cafe. >> It’s so delicious. Oh my god. The best I had on stili. Wow. What is inside this? >> Squid. >> Also squid bread, cheese. >> Wow. Everything is delicious, but this is the star. >> Okay. Yes. >> Okay. You heard the lady. The star seems to be the desair. And right now, I cannot imagine it because this is incredible. Will be very hard to top this. Let’s see. In the meantime, the dair arrived. It looks already fantastic. So let me quickly explain how it’s made up. This is the special granita. This is what we came here for. So this is granita with ricotta cheese. We have on top candied capers. The sprinkled powder is also like caper salt, mint leaf on top. And we have here a biscuit with big marmalade filling. All right, time to dig in. Let’s try this. This is what we came here for. And I will take a look. A spoon with everything. Cheers. Wow. >> Game over. This is too good. The ricotta cheese has such an intense flavor. Caramelized capers. This combination is insane. I will come back for this tomorrow. I have to. Very sad to have this one finished. And this is probably the best granita I ever had. Wow. What a fantastic food experience that was at Papero in Reinella. This experience, I give this a 10 out of 10. I have nothing to complain. You know, the lunch was beautiful, very delicious, very refreshing, perfect choice. All the recommendations they gave me, it was wonderful. And then of course the star, the dair with the ricotta granita with the capers on top. Fantastic. Best granita I had. And now tomorrow morning I leave this island. But I have another goal. I want to come back here before I leave. But for this I have to wake up very very early. Now we are heading back home. But before we do that, let’s see if we can explore the beach. So follow me. And I found this beautiful black sand beach. Okay, my bad. That’s not a sandy beach. Not at all. It’s It’s 100% made out of stone.

A full day on Salina, from hiking Monte Fossa delle Felci to eating the best arancini and granita of my life at Pa.Pe.Ro in Rinella. Even though I didn’t reach the summit, the views were unforgettable – and the food was even better.
