We visited our first German CHRISTMAS MARKETS! 🎄 (Munich, Germany)

Merry Christmas. >> Welcome to Munich. This is our first Christmas market in Europe ever. We are starting in Munich. In case you can’t tell, a little bit jetlagged, a little bit tired. I’m hoping that our excitement is going to overcompensate or cover up the exhaustion that we are feeling. >> Yes. And what better way to do this than starting off at a medieval Christmas market? Because when I think Christmas, I think Knights of the Round Table. >> Night of the Round Table. Okay, so if you don’t know Christmas markets in Europe, a lot of these cities have different markets that have different theme. This one is a medieval theme. Now, I’ve never been one to go to a Renaissance fair. I’m guessing that’s sort of the same idea, but I don’t know. We’re going to find out. It smells good. >> We used to have people in our neighborhood that would lar I was very interested in joining them. Let’s go. He the page and stand by me. If thou knowest peasant, who is he? Where is he? Bring me flesh and bring me wine. Bring me Google Translate translated this to buyer tong punch, but it’s a punch made with rum. It’s a punch they had in a giant bowl that was warm. And then they put this sugar cube on it and they poured the rum over the sugar cube and then she took a blowtorrch and lit the sugar cube and the rum on fire and the whole goblet like caught on fire which was pretty cool. Not the whole goblet cut, but like the the liquid inside caught on fire. It was a pretty cool presentation. Now, this whole thing technically cost €23 because their their cups are very popular. Now, the drink itself was only €8, which for a one of a kind beverage with alcohol on it in a market like this, personally, I don’t think is that bad considering, I mean, a domestic beer in the States at a cheap restaurant these days is going to run you almost the same thing. You will get the deposit back. €15 comes back to you when you return the cup. Now, if you want to keep the cup, it’ll cost you €15. You can keep it as a souvenir if you want. It is pretty cool, but I’ll try it. I’ll let you know how it tastes in a second. Is it still on fire? I’m going to wait another minute. >> My eyebrows are already blonde. Nothing. >> So, I just got a big thing of lighter fluid. It’s kind of the same thing. >> We planned that. >> Hot strong. Oh, that’s a lot of rum. >> It is warm. It is fruity punch and I like the rum taste in it. It just has a nice solid wintry warmth taste to it. It is stronger than the wine you’re going to get here. So, do be careful. I think it’s like 11 12%. It tastes a little stronger than that to me. So, just be careful. We’re splitting this and it’s like the size of a very large cup of wine. So, pace yourselves. I do want to say if you just don’t drink alcohol, if you’re sober, there are plenty of foods and drinks to take part in that do not have alcohol. And that’s a concern for some people. Lots of non-alcoholic beverages. Like you can get a lot of these drinks as non-alcoholic. There’s plenty of punches with plenty of cers, plenty of uh hot chocolates, that kind of thing that have no alcohol in it. So like these are usually very familyfriendly activities. So, you don’t have to worry. Like, if you want to stay away from alcohol, if that’s just not your thing, don’t worry. In fact, most of the drinks we’re getting do not have alcohol in it. So, just go in knowing that. >> Sarah just whispered in my ear, “That’s the horn of Gondor.” She’s such a nerd. >> I want to get him in trouble, but you have to blur out his face. >> Chris didn’t mean to, but we were just watching this guy working. You’re getting a shot cuz everybody is like in dress from medieval times. As Chris turned the camera to get a shot of him working, the guy like leans down and pulls out his gear from behind the counter and just takes a long swig. >> It’s like 2:00 in the afternoon and he’s on the job. >> Germany, it’s so funny. Just like whatever he wants to do, it’s just totally fine. >> Beer is like water in Germany. The theme here is medieval and they’ve done a really really good job at maintaining that theme. It’s just something about the buildings and that they’ve got the costumes. It they’ve done a good job. >> Like each of the little I guess they’re called tents. All right. Each of the little like vendors has a tent, but they’re all very like tutor style, very wooden. They’re all very well I don’t want to say constructed cuz I don’t know if they’re the highest quality, but they’re made to be very themed, very medieval, very well done. I wish we could come here at night, but because of how we’re in Munich and how long we’re here, it doesn’t work out for us to be at this particular market in the evenings, which is kind of a shame cuz I think it’d be kind of cool to be here at night and see like, you know, it looks like maybe they have real fires, lanterns, and that kind of thing. It is very well done. And all the people who are working the different booths are in character and they’re dressed to play the part like of the medieval times. And I kind of wish they had like music and live performances. Looks like there’s a stage maybe for nativity. They have a star over the stage. People are sitting up there right now. It was raining earlier. So maybe they let people just sit up there when there’s not live performances. But very well done. I read that this is one of the best themed markets in for sure Munich, but also kind of in Europe. So, if you really love medieval themed stuff, this is a great place. But if you just kind of want to see fun Christmas market, different angle of Christmas, this might be the place to go. >> And you could get a goblet of fire. >> Sarah just told me that this is one of the oldest markets in all of Germany. >> I’m Chris’s personal Wikipedia on these trips. >> And Sarah could be your personal Wikipedia next year. We want to invite you to travel and do Christmas markets with us in 2026. We have just opened it live. There’s a QR code right here. You can learn more about the dates, how much it’s going to cost. We only have 20 spots left. Starting right here in Munich, you can come see this exact same square, this exact same market, do the exact same things we’re doing in this video if you wish. And then we’re going to be going to Austria to Salsburg, which is the home of Sound of Music. It’s a beautiful city. and then onto Vienna, which is just magical and beautiful and just so romantic and incredible and famous for Christmas, too. So, if any of that or all of that interests you, go check it out. Sign up. We would love to have you travel with us. We love traveling, but travel is made so much better when you get to share it with friends. >> Guys, scan the QR code, click the link, and we’ll hopefully see you next year. You know what’s really magical and funny about these Christmas markets is that we have this list ongoing. We’re like, “Hey, we’ll hit this one, this one, this one.” And we’re walking and we saw this Christmas market through a door frame. >> I don’t know what this is. >> Wasn’t on a list for us anyway. And there’s tons of people in here. And it’s beautiful. And it’s just so fun to walk around and experience this. So, you don’t really have to have a set plan. You can just kind of stumble on things, which is super fun. >> I know this is stupid and there’s beautiful decorations, there’s a beautiful tree, beautiful Christmas windmill. I mean, there beautiful, beautiful market. But the thing that I keep drawing my eyes to is the trash can. Look how it’s decorated like a gingerbread house. I don’t know why that makes me laugh. Remember we had the medieval theme. This one is definitely more Christmas. Like this feels like Christmas. We got jingle bells in the background. Santa sleigh was somewhere. And those gingerbread trash cans are lining up the street. It’s starting to feel like Christmas with the big man. >> This is Coca-Cola Santa. >> This is a street that we’ve walked down several times during our multiple weeks in Munich over the last couple of months. And we just are seeing it for a totally different thing this time. It’s a whole new season, literally. And it’s Christmas. And it just reminds us yet again that you can be somewhere that you’ve been several times before and see something totally different. Now, yes, this is very drastically different because it’s Christmas and it’s magical and it’s very bright and shiny and magical, but it is a good reminder that you can go to the same place and still see something new all the time. Currently, we are at Marian Plots, which is a very big Christmas market. And as you can tell with me walking around and dodging people with this camera in my hand, it’s very busy. Christmas is here. Is this too late to rest on Mary’s life is sleeping whom angels greet with them. >> Okay, so right off of Marian Plats, there’s actually an entire Christmas market that is all about nativities. So they have these different booths and they are all dedicated to nativities. So you can buy pre-esigned, pre-organized, preset nativities and they also have where you can kind of pick and choose and make your own nativity. I don’t mean like stand there and whittle your own nativity pieces, but I mean you can pick and choose what goes in your set which is so cool. Now they can range from affordable to very very very expensive. So just go into this knowing. But I think this is so cool. We don’t have a nativity set at our house. I would love one. My parents actually have a really cool one that was like handcrafted in Israel years and years and years ago. I kind of want the pizza maker. I don’t think that’s original to the original Christmas story, but that’s pretty cool. Who’s to say there wasn’t a pizza oven at the original nativity, the original Christmas night? So, this is our very first Christmas market ever in our lives. I mean, we went to the mall growing up, but we never had like Christmas markets like this. >> Well, we’re American. We commercialize Christmas. >> So, right off the bat, it is busy. But >> this makes Oktoberfest look like a walk in the park. I wasn’t expecting it to be this busy at all. >> It’s very crowded. It is a Saturday. Hustle and bustle. You can feel the Christmas spirit, the holiday cheer is happening. All right, I’m getting hungry, so I got curry worst. Now, I’m uncultured and I don’t know how to eat this, so I’m assuming I just dump it into the the loaf of bread. Please tell me in the comments how to eat this. It is good. It is warm. It is food. I am hungry. It is filling. It is delicious. More expensive. I think the last time we had curry worst like three blocks over when we were here a couple months ago, it was half this price. But you will pay when you are in touristy places. You’ll pay during Christmas time. Also, they gave you a plate. You stuff it in the roll like how we did, which is great. And then if you bring the plate back, you get a euro back, which is super nice. >> I’m on my tiptoes. We got one mold wine and one hot chocolate. I saw a girl walk by with the whipped cream on top and I was like, “Excuse me, excuse me. What is that?” And she looked at me like I was crazy and she was like, “Hot chocolate?” I was like, “I need that.” So, this is hot wine. Mold wine. Smells like maybe they put some cranberries or oranges and some cinnamon stick. I don’t really know, but we’re going to go for it. I don’t think I’ve ever actually had mold wine. >> After this season, I don’t think there’s ever going to be another way for us to do Christmas. Chris, I think once you do Christmas in Europe, I’m not sure there’s another way to go back. I don’t know. I love a good home American Christmas. I do. But there’s something fun already about going to Christmas markets and trying the fun foods and seeing the lights. It’s so magical. So, mold wine commonly includes spices like cinnamon sticks, cloves, and anise and a sweetener like honey or sugar. It is also often made with citrus like sliced oranges and can be enhanced with liquor like brandy. So, my taste buds were on point. I I tasted citrus, cinnamon, and now that I I can taste the um cloves, too, now that they say that, but I didn’t instantly pick up on that. So, that’s pretty good. >> We may have started a very expensive tradition. >> You know, you really found your your partner, your husband, your spouse in life when one person really likes the whipped cream on top of things and the other person doesn’t. So, anytime we buy something like hot chocolate, I can just go for it and eat all the whipped cream off the top. doesn’t like it. >> You know, like we mentioned before, this is our first Christmas market and I wasn’t used to the paying for the cup and then when you’re done, then you go back and they’ll give you money back. So, it is kind of pricey at first, but then you return the cup or whatever plate, whatever it is, and they’ll give you money back. Or you can just keep it as a cheap souvenir. Pro tip, don’t go back and forth between the hot chocolate and the mold wine. It’s It’s not a good mixer. Still, they’re good individually. I I’m really appreciating this right now, especially it’s cold. This This feels nice. >> When Christmas made me feel so young, the ring of the bells, the stories we sung. >> So, if you don’t know what a Christmas windmill is, and I think they’re called Christmas windmills, there’s a lot of debate online. So, if this is the incorrect term, let me know. But this is a life-size one right there. >> Inside this one, they’re actually cooking a lot of like broughtwur, curry wor, a lot of meat, and all the smoke is going up and the propellers at the top. It’s making it go around. You can buy these for your house for like miniature versions. You know, they’re really intricate, really beautiful. A lot of people have them in their homes at this market. This is a really big one. You can come here and eat, have a nice view of it. They they’ve got fires over here. It’s really kind of homey right now. Feels really nice. >> I don’t think it’s I don’t think the heat of it making it go around. I’m pretty sure it’s electric. But Chris is on to something because traditionally I grew up with one of these in my house. Traditionally, you can see the little candles around this one. This one’s 12 m tall, so it would take a heck of a fire or a lot of heat to make this one go around. But the candles traditionally on the little ones is they the heat from the candles is what makes the the windmill go around so it spins around. But this one I’m pretty sure is electric. I don’t think it’s the oven that’s making it go around. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Chris is right. I mean the oven is in the center of it. I hear a noise that makes me think it’s electric. I mean that would be a lot of power. Baby, that thing is huge. S Sarah may Sarah may be right. They may need a bigger fire to get that thing going. It’s so cool though. >> We wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Good tidings we bring to you and good tidings for Christmas and a happy new year. Now bring us a figgy. Now bring us a figgy pudding. Now bring us a figgy pudding and bring it out here. We won’t go until we get some. We won’t go until we get some. We won’t go until we get some. So bring some out here. For we all love figy pudding. We all love figgy pudding. We all love figgy pudding. So bring some here. We wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

  1. For the Currywurst you can Put the sausage in the bun or just eat one piece at the time and Take a bite from the bun… You should try some other flavours of Glühwein like cherry or blueberry or the white on

  2. This vlog beautifully captures the magic of Munich's Christmas markets, from the unique medieval theme to the delicious food and festive crowds. 🎄 It’s a wonderful guide for anyone planning a European winter road trip. 🥨 Amazing! 🍷✨

  3. Great vlog of Munich Christmas markets. The medieval market is much nicer to visit in the evening. Torches provide illumination, and sometimes fire-eaters perform.

  4. Our family Christmas Eve tradition is to go to Woburn Sands to play with our brass band on the green in the evening. Our mini concert is always very well attended, with a mixture of popular christmas music and sing-along carols and the players are drawn from all our bands from the top ‘A’ band down to the beginners ‘D’ band.
Whilst we are out, our mulled wine is heating up nicely in our slow cooker, ready to be drunk when we get home.

  5. Please note: Keeping the cup is stealing. You will hardly get checked for it, because they know some people keep the cups.
Maybe on the medieval market is was diffrent and they wrote that you buy the cup for that price. But that is an special case.

  6. Hi Sara & Chris, thank you for the lovely video! Glad you're enjoying your time in Germany/Munich, so much to see and do!
Have a great time, and have a wonderful Christmas … cheers from Munich. ❤

  7. Hey guys! Sometimes the algorithm is just great! Absolutely enjoyed this video. If you like medieval themed Christmas markets, visit Esslingen. Nice you pointed out, that nearly all drinks are available in a non alcohol version. Enjoy what you discover on your way! Cheers from the Harz mountains ✌️
