The Christmas market in Freiburg at Rathausplatz, near the St. Martin church is one of the most atmospheric spots in the old town. Along the historic walls wooden stalls offer mulled wine, roasted almonds, local treats, and handmade crafts. It’s always lively, warm, and cozy — the perfect place to stroll and soak up the true festive spirit of Freiburg. Oh yes, you heard right — French is spoken here too! Freiburg is close to the French border, so German and French mingle naturally in the streets. At the Freiburg Christmas market, you can find all sorts of treats, handmade souvenirs, special gifts, decorations, and plenty of items to suit every taste. How beautiful it is when Christmas markets are set beside such ancient spiritual landmarks. It adds a special calm and warmth to the celebration, as if the city’s history is embracing every visitor It’s easy to get lost in the festive atmosphere and forget the rush of everyday life, swept up in the holiday bustle. I don’t mind just thinking about gifts, and breathing in the scents of seasonal treats and drinks. After all, Christmas has its own incomparable, unique aroma! Freiburg is a city that knows how to welcome you with warmth in any season, so imagine what it’s like during the winter holidays. Just as there’s no Christmas without a tree, there’s no Christmas market without cheerful merry-go-rounds. Here’s a whole tiny town settled right on a stall! It’s amazing how much love and work goes into making it look so real. Freiburg’s Christmas market isn’t just one spot — it spreads across 7–8 locations in the old town, creating a festive atmosphere everywhere you go. And those smells of traditional treats… they practically guide you from stall to stall! There’s the scent of grilled Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, roasted almonds, hot waffles… It’s impossible to walk by without wanting to try everything! Even just the town hall building towering over the stalls is breathtaking — with its towers and ornate façade, it feels straight out of a fairy tale. On the square by the town hall in Freiburg, the cobblestones feature coats of arms of the city’s twin towns, showing friendship and connections between these cities . It’s hard to put this atmosphere into words — music is playing everywhere, twinkling lights are all around, and the smell of fresh pastries and spices fills the air. If you want a little break from the crowd but still soak up the city’s Christmas spirit, you can stroll through the charming streets of the old town. There’s always something to admire in Freiburg, especially in the city center, and even more so during the holidays.
