I Let the Cheapest Flights Decide My Trip…1 Week, 4 Countries, No Plan
I need an adventure. So, for the next week, I’ll be taking the cheapest flight every day to wherever it is going. And I have no idea where it will take me. Using Skyscanner, I’ll set it to explore everywhere and go with the cheapest option it has the following day. The only rules, it has to be an international flight, and I can’t repeat any of the countries. Now, let’s see where I end up. I booked a ticket, packed my bag, and hopped on the train, gladly saying farewell to British summer drizzle. Then, I was at the airport, ready for my first of the cheapest flights. And this one, at least, I knew promised some sunshine. I used to absolutely hate Manchester airport. But they’ve updated all the security systems. So that was a breeze. It was so quick to go through. It took about 3 minutes. So, uh, it’s a good start. Scrap that 2hour delay. 4 hours and 40 later, I am in CIT. and it is incredible. I have been here before when I was about 14 and I loved it then. This time I’m just exploring Hania cuz that’s where the airport is or one of the two airports. This water looks so good. It would be rude to not go for a swim but I forgot my trunks so it’ll have to be a boxer swim but I’m not passing the chance to swim here. It’s so nice. The water is amazingly clear. Oh. Oh my god. Just 2 days ago, I didn’t even know I was coming here. And now I’m swimming in the Mediterranean. Swim done. Now I don’t really have much of a plan. I think I’m just going to have a wander, check out the old town, find some Greek food to eat, and just see what I can do. The whole point of this was to not know what I was doing, and just go with the flow. So fingers crossed I can make it a nice fun day. I mean, it’s already started off so well. That water was amazing. Stumbled across a free little film festival type place. Check out this one. One of the best films of all time. I honestly can’t believe how pretty this place is. I mean, I know it’s grease and it’s going to be nice looking, but it’s beautiful. Look at that. That lighthouse just looks amazing. That whole harbor front was stunning. All the little cafes and restaurants. A typical stereotypical Greek design. Just looks brilliant. Oh, what a good start to the trip. I don’t think we could have had a better one if we tried. Hello. >> A sweet little thing. >> Lovely colors. Don’t you? I don’t have any food. Right. So, my first meal in Creek is a sulaki wrap. Apparently, it looks like a US pitter, but she said it was a sublaki. And I don’t typically like tomatoes all that much, but in Greece, I love them. We got so much better flavor here. How can something so simple be so delicious >> and apparently messy. So, when I was walking around the harbor, I saw this little viewpoint that I wanted to check out on this old fortress back there. It’s called the Venetian Fortress, and it’s free to enter. So, that’s always a nice surprise. And I’m just about to get to the viewpoint to have a high vantage point of the whole harbor. Wow, it’s so beautiful here. I can’t get over it. Come to me. Yeah. Hello. I found a place that does rolled ice cream. I’ve never had that before, so I decided to give it a try. I chose a coconut base with Oreo and mango as the toppings, which upon reflection may not have been the best combo choice. But it was quite cool to see how it all worked. The plate is apparently minus 20°, and it freezes almost instantly. €7 though, so quite a lot. I don’t know if it’s nicer than normal ice cream, but for the entertainment having it rolled in front of you, pretty good. So, the old town of Hanata is lovely. I’m on one of the quieter outskirt parts now. And look, beautiful minouette right there and it’s just amazing. I’m impressed to be honest. I really like it. I’m on one of the outskirts areas now. There’s a few like really popular famous spots right in the center, a road called Kandilaki, and that one has all your touristy memorabilia and souvenirs you can buy. And it is really pretty. I’ll show you now. Can I get the one scoop of dark chocolate, please? Well, I know I’ve already had an ice cream, but Oh, dark chocolate gelato. No dairy. I am in heaven. Oh, wow. >> That’s good. Let’s find a place to sit and eat. Wow. So, this is where I’m staying. It’s a hostel about 5 10 minute walk from the old town and it cost £21 a night, which isn’t too bad. And to be fair, it’s one of the nicest hosts I’ve ever stayed at in terms of like cleanliness and space. What can I say? £21. Can’t complain. Pretty good. I’m used to paying half that for a private room in Asia, but we’re in Europe and it’s in the peak of summer. I met some people from the host and we enjoyed a meal out together and yet another ice cream before seeing what Hania had on offer for the evening. The next cheapest flight cost me £32, but it wasn’t until the evening. So, I spent the following day walking around, eating, and seeing the same stuff again before heading to the airport. It’s delayed. Oh. So, this line is 1 hour and 15 minutes and it’s a brand new country for me. So, I’m excited to go to it, but I messed up with my accommodation. I didn’t realize that there was a twist. So, they haven’t actually approved it. And it’s going to be 10:00 p.m. when I land. made it to Malta. This looks fantastic. I can’t wait to explore it tomorrow. But all my accommodation options fell through. I had three set up. I had the Airbnb that I booked or tried to book, but it was never actually approved. And then I was going to have a hostel sold out in the last hour I was on the flight. And then also the same for a hotel that I had in mind. All gone. So now I’m going to a fancy hotel, the Grand Harbor Hotel. It costs £100 for the night, but the last few nights were host. The cheap flight here, which has kind of been negated now, can kind of pay towards it. Um, let me just find out where I am. Where am I? Oh, here we are. He’s actually here. Okay, here’s a quick tour of my last minute 102 room booking. Nice bed. Slept well. Good air con. That was needed. Little bit of a working station. Your bathroom. Shower was very nice. This little balcony kind of thing with a nice view out to some old buildings. Luggage storage. And then this is where like the magic is in this room. Look at that. That is an incredible view. So you got a little balcony. Oh my gosh, I fell over. You got a balcony. And then wow, that is a very nice view. So let’s get out there and explore it. One day in Malta. I’m going to leave tomorrow because everything’s booked out here. So, it’s not worth staying longer. I’ll just have to come back another time. While it’s not the most ideal place to go swimming, I have managed to find a spot in Valleta itself to get in the water because it is remarkably hot today. We got lots of people swimming already. Little jumping point. Oh, he’s going to do a jump. Hey, look at that. Oh, this is going to be good fun. It’s so hot. Must be like 34°. Well, that was a lovely surprise. I didn’t think I was going to be able to get swimming today, so I’m delighted. I have decided to join a walking tour. It cost €22 and it’s 3 hours. and just started off at the city gates which is the most modern part of the city and apparently not very well liked by the maltes. Said to resemble a bit of a cheese crater. I don’t see it myself but I can see why they think that. Valeta is a stunning old city. Its steep streets are lined with honeyccoled limestone, barack churches and balconies and stories of sieges, sailors and saints. As we walked around, the guide told us about how the city was designed to impress and defend in equal measure. It is a place where you feel like you are walking through history. >> I don’t think it was worth €22, >> but it was the only one available. Normally you go on the free one, then just donate like a tenner. Came to check out the lower Baraka Gardens and somehow managed to crash a wedding. It looks beautiful. I am now heading to the upper Baraka Gardens because the cannons will be shot out soon. The Valleta cannon fires daily at 12:00 and 400 p.m. at the saluting battery. You can watch it for free from the upper Baraka Gardens, which is one of the best vantage points overlooking the Grand Harbor. And if you don’t want to walk up the hills, you can take this lift for €1, which as I was feeling lazy, I decided to do. Okay, it’s time to book the next flight. And that actually determines whether I need to pay for another hotel tonight because if it’s an early enough flight, I won’t bother. I’ll just go to the airport and spend a few extra hours there. Malta, everywhere. Oh, okay. £43. So again, it’s still not that cheap. That’s the price you pay for doing this in summer. And the flight is at 700 a.m. 7 a.m. So, airport at 5, wake up from a hotel at 4:00. There’s no point getting a hotel. I can do an all nighter. There’s a wine festival on tonight in the park. So, I will definitely be going on going to that because that goes until 1:00 a.m. And I believe the last bus to the airport is 12. So, that’s good. Okay, evening sorted. Let’s go check out the rest of this town. Honestly, by this point, I felt like I had seen most of Valleta. And I wish I had more time since I would have loved to have taken a tour and seen more of the island. And I probably would have enjoyed that even more than the city, as I have heard it’s quite spectacular. But I had a nice enough time revisiting some of the same spots. And then I saw this megaized cruise ship which looked to be around the same size as half the city which is honestly quite ridiculous. Oh, and then I found the pub in which Oliver Reed drank himself to death in during the filming of the Gladiator. And like many Brits used it as an excuse to enjoy a nice cold pint. So, I went to a spa to get some water and then put a bakery in this bar here. And I managed to find some local maltes trees. This is a pastiti. It’s a pea version. And also got a casata. Again, a pea version. The pea is a version of the veggie version. Let’s give it a whirl. You might have put it in the oven a bit too long. But delicious. And this whole thing cost me 60 and 160 to 220 for a pretty substantial snack stash dinner. Look at this pe as casata. That’s airy as well. Like a pea pie. Just mushy fe inside of a pie for 160 is real. But taste alone is probably like a six out of 10. I ended the night by walking around aimlessly soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the live bands before heading to the wine festival which also happened to have some great live music. all my time. >> So, it’s time to see if this was a terrible idea or just a not so good idea. It was only one of those two options. The letter comes alive at night time. It was good in the day. It was great at nighttime. It is currently 12:22 and it’s hot and I’m sweaty. And just like that, just over 24 hours later, back at the airport. It’s a shame I couldn’t spend longer in Malta. But sometimes you just can’t stay as long as you want. Somehow I managed to sleep for 3 hours on this bench. So I must have been knackered. I just used my packing cube with my clothes in as a pillow and I just slept with my bag under my leg like that and I went to sleep. And just like that, I am in Rome. Look at that coliseum. I have been here before, so I’m not going to go in this time. But you can’t come to Rome without coming to see the coliseum. is always impressive. I love the building itself, but I don’t like the fact that there’s a ring road around it. I would have thought it would be in a park like the Forum or that kind of area. But still, it is amazing. So, if you’ve never been before, it’s so worth it. But it was only 2 or 3 years ago that I did it. So, it’s still quite fresh, so I’m not going to bother again this time. >> It’s still just incredible walking around it, though. The whole of Rome is it’s like you’re walking around a an open air museum. in the entire city. This is my favorite building in all of Rome. used to be free, but now it’s €5 to get in, which I would pay, but I don’t want to stand in one of those cues for ages. So, I’ll just have to look back at my pictures I took last time. Instead, I joined a free walking tour focusing on the streets and ruins leading towards the Colosseum. This area was once the center stage of the Roman Empire where politics, power, and public life played out in the Roman Forum and tens of thousands gathered for nearby spectacles in the coliseum. If you haven’t noticed yet, I think walking tours are a brilliant way to learn about new places as you get to meet other people and you’re not just reading about the history, you’re learning about it in the very place the events happened. And there’s just something pretty cool knowing that I’m stood where these people once stood themselves. So I just finished the tour. I chose to go on the ancient Rome tour which focus has made me on this area around the coliseum and the road leading to it and it was fascinating. Absolutely great information. So the walking tour guide recommended this spot. It’s literally 2 minutes away from the coliseum and he said it’s a local pizza place. So this marinara only cost €550. Look at it. Just got four cloves of garlic. Five tons. Wow. How are those four ingredients so good? According to the walk-in tour guide, this is one of the best views you can get of the ancient Rome main area. You come up the monument to Victor Emanuel II, I think it is. And the balcony area is completely free. You just got to pay if you want to go inside. But look at that. How stunning is this? So you got the old town and city, the coliseum, the forum. Yeah. I didn’t do this last time. So, sometimes a free walk-in tour pays off. You do donate at the end. Obviously, you don’t even need to go to any of the museums in Rome. You can just go to the churches and the cathedrals and the artwork in those are spectacular. If you haven’t got the time or want to spend the money, pop into a few churches and you’ll see some Caravajio and Michelangelo. This is the Piaza Navana. Just a big square. a very nice one with some glorious fountains and an incredible building like most of Rome. I then ticked off technically another country by walking to the Vatican to have a quick visit of St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s worth a visit, but I find it mind-blowing to see just how much money the Vatican has and how they spent a lot of it on making their churches and cathedrals as lavish as possible. So, this is absolutely mental. Heat. Heat. So, I haven’t been to this part of Rome before. When I came last time, we didn’t go to this area. It’s called Chast and it’s really cool. I cannot help myself. I’ve got another gelato. I think I’ve had about six or seven in 3 days. It’s just too good not to have. >> So, one thing I absolutely love about Rome is there’s fountains everywhere like free drinking water for everyone. You can plug it. They’ve all got a little hole at the top so it spouts out. currently sitting for the caricature. He’s drawing away. €10. So, I thought, hey, try it out. >> I had a few hours left in Rome, so I found some people to party with. And then my time here also came to an end. And we’re back at the airport. It is 2:00, so. Obviously, cuz it’s pitch black. Um 5:30 flight to the next destination. So, another long night. Okay. So, uh we can’t go through security yet. We got to wait for another half an hour until it’s 2 hours before. But there’s a comfortable space up here is this is the last place I’ll be going to. technically isn’t the cheapest, but I had a look around and going here and then flying to the UK was the same price as flying to the UK from Rome, so I thought I could squeeze another one in. The whole trip’s been amazing so far, though. The only thing is obviously being summer the flights are a bit more expensive than they would be out of summer and they’ve averaged around4 or 50 as opposed to 12 to £18 which I have seen a lot on Sky. If you’re going to do this trip I recommend doing it outside of summer. Plus the accommodation would be a lot cheaper. A lot more money on accommodation than I would have otherwise have liked or preferred. Do you want to see the uh caricature that I had drawn last night? cuz it is epic. Tell me if you see the uh resemblance. Anyway, that would be going on the wall. I didn’t know it was going to be so big, but I’ll put it up somewhere. Head home. Been good. Onwards to the next one. And just like that, Barcelona, the Basilica de Sagaria Familia. Obviously very impressive. I did come here 10 years ago and um it was covered in scaffolding and drapes so you couldn’t really see it. So it was nice to see it this time. I’ve just gone past the Arctic Triumph and I’m making my way to the park before heading to the Gothic Quarter, which from my memory was my favorite part about this city last time. I wasn’t expecting to see they parakeetses. I think they’re parakeetses. Wasn’t expecting to see them today. This little kid has some sunflower seeds and he was just letting it jump onto his hand and he would show them around to everyone. That was so sweet. One of them had a solar panel on his back. So, I guess that’s how they track them or something. But I’ve never seen that before. By this point, I was becoming increasingly tired and I didn’t really know what to do. So, I just thought I’ll go have a look at the beach. I only wanted to have a quick look at it just to say I’ve seen it. I’m shattered. This last week is taking it off out of me. I made it to the Gothic Quarter, but I was so tired that I couldn’t really enjoy it as I could barely stay awake. I severely underestimated what the lack of sleep would do to me on this trip. Uh, I did however find a little rock festival which was quite cool, but unfortunately I didn’t think the band were very good. So I cut my losses and I made my way back to my accommodation with a quick trip to the famous market on Las Ramblas before making it to my room where I proceeded to fall asleep instantly and nearly missed my bus to the airport the next day. I am well and truly wiped. This trip has taken its toll on me. the late nights, the early mornings. I’m not used to it anymore, but it has been good. I’ve now sat in the airport waiting to go home. And the really annoying thing is I had a quick look at Sky Caner just now, and you can get £18 flight to Morocco. But hey, the four places I went were good. But um yeah, I would have liked to have gone further a field, but what can you do? Just have to do it another time.
I Took The Cheapest Flight Everyday And Ended Up In…
I’ve wanted a challenge which I couldn’t plan and so I took the cheapest flight every day to see where I would end up. This turned into a very spontaneous trip and I lucked out with the destinations.
This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the lack of control but wow, I underestimated just how exhausting it would be!
Would you take a trip without knowing where you would end up? No destination, no expectations — just wherever the price takes you?
I’ve seen a few people do this now and thought it looked like a lot of fun so here is my version. Inspired by Ben Morris, Jorden Tually and Ash and Kels
