Join me for a festive evening walk through the Essen Christmas Market in December 2025, set in the heart of western Germany. Filmed on a chilly December night, this walking tour begins near Essen’s main station at Willy-Brandt-Platz—where, unlike in past years, no Christmas market is operating this season. From there, we continue toward Kennedyplatz, home to Essen’s renowned International Christmas Market.
Along the way, we’ll also stop by the nearby Flachsmarkt, where a Medieval Christmas Market adds a unique historical atmosphere and even more seasonal charm to the experience.
As we stroll through the city, take in the glowing Christmas lights and explore a wide variety of stalls offering handcrafted gifts and classic winter treats. The air is rich with the aromas of roasted almonds, mulled wine, and freshly prepared potato pancakes. With around 170 stalls, the Essen Christmas Market is among the largest and most diverse in Western Germany, celebrated for its international flair and festive ambiance.
Essen lies in the center of the Ruhr region and is its second-largest city after Dortmund. With a population of approximately 579,000, it ranks as the fourth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the ninth-largest in Germany.
