Why Melbourne Feels Different Than Sydney

Ep.185 Melbourne surprised us in ways we didn’t expect. It wasn’t through landmarks or highlights, but through how the city actually works and feels. In this video, we share what stood out most, the moments that changed how we experienced the city, and what we learned by paying attention to daily life, people, and place. If you’re curious about Melbourne beyond the checklist, this is our honest take.

  1. I’m a Melburnian. I think when a lot of North Americans come here they will explore the cbd and sites around there. But that isn’t really the heart of Melbourne. Its heart exists in other inner suburbs like Fitzroy, St Kilda, Collingwood, Carlton. I would say if you want to experience Melbourne- The Collingwood to Fitzroy area is the true heartbeat

  2. I’m currently holidaying in Melbourne from Sydney — so many times I’m reminded of the experience of visiting European cities, just a lot easier and cheaper to do 😂 laneways! coffees! so much heritage

  3. 2:20 respectfully disagree compared to Sydney’s Opal, which lets you tap your credit card or phone instead. But the Opal card costs $0 and is a lot easier to top up. The Myki machine in Melbourne (which I last used in 2023) was so slow and cumbersome.

  4. Make sure you come back! By then, Melbourne will be easily the largest city in Australia, as it has a larger polutaiton now than Sydney, and is growing steadily.

  5. You guys brought the rain with you. Thank you for sharing your experience in our beautiful and brave city. Melbourne is a community that fights for justice, fairness and good cup of coffee 😂 The world has a big problem with domestic violence and we are not ashamed about talking about it and supporting women and children. We like to help travellers because we know how far away we are from the rest of the world. We are all immigrants except or aboriginal peoples. Our niceness is just a way of showing that we understand life can be better with a little kindness. The world needs more kindness ❤

  6. The Melbourne weather mythology you hear in other Australian cities is so tiresome and utterly wrong. It has four seasons like so many European and North American cities, yet it's much better than most. Winter is cold and wet, but no snow yet there are plenty of sunny days. Spring is changeable, it can be wet and cool, but it can also be fine and mild. Summer is hot, yet not the Bangkok-like humidity and torrential rain of summer in Sydney and Brisbane. Then there's autumn which is really beautiful. And there are beaches a tram ride or a good walk from the city centre. Not surf beaches, but family friendly and easy.

  7. I was born in Sydney. I lived there until I was 25 & I only moved because of the traffic, pollution etc. I have been living in Queensland since but I love Melbourne the most. I visit yearly. I wish I could move there but all of my family are now in Queensland…. One day I will. If not Melbourne, Italy with the rest of my family.

  8. Melbourne’s weather is much more stable in February and March, which is why most major events take place during these months. You want to leave Melbourne and Sydney, go to the Whitsunday's in QLD

  9. as an ex Melbournian I want to thank you for a very fair and well thought out tour of my "old" city….I have lived in Toronto (40 years) and like Melbourne, it is a great city…..really appreciate spending time in Melbourne with you guys……all the best

  10. Melbourne has terrible weather most of the year and the reason they follow AFL so religiously as there isn't much else to do. Sydney is better. Brisbane is the best.

  11. " Sydney is the face of Australia, Melbourne is the heart " that is Big lie and talk up to your city.

There are lot red neck and racist Australia promote by AFL football in Melbourne, television and media to divide the society like America , a very deeply divide society : different class, different race, different job, different income, different suburbs. they show to each other face " I am better than you"

    1. After 10 pm, it not safe for women or lady to walk alone around in the city or suburbs

    2. If you live in the western suburbs , or working class suburbs you are automatic a 2nd class people in melbourne . They indirectly encourage society look down on each other or employer dont give you a job. Although they are working class themself or even poorer than anyone else . they check your address and postcode and if you rent home or own home, a new car or old car you drive etc

    3. If you stay for long term, you will notice people show disrespect to each other on the street and it a no gone zone for Muslim, Asian, black in many wealthy suburbs. A real segregate society like the US without the need to build gate community. People dont come back

    4. How can you call yourself a beautiful city when there are 4 season in a day: sunny in the morning freezing cold in the afternoon and rain in middle of the day.
Winter everyone hide in the office or at home.

    5. Why do you think there are so much crimes in Melbourne more than anywhere in Australia, it time bomb waiting to explodes for decades

    6. Melbourne has the highest suicide rate and domestic violence in Australia. Why do you think it happen?
The media always paint a beautiful picture, so everyone feel lucky they live in Melbourne:
The most livable city in the world ,
The best foods city in Australia
The best coffee city in the country etc.

Government paid major publication around the world to the win the world title

  12. I just stumbled across this vlog and watched it for fun. I am Australian, so have been to Melbourne lots. But the way you interact with each other and share your experience was magical
To watch. I am looking forward to following you now and seeing where else you have been. Keep up the great vlogs! X

  13. Sydney is more like Los Angeles (but with a very pretty harbour). It's all about hustle, business, and (in the eastern suburbs) being glamorous. Melbourne is more like San Francisco/Bay Area (but without the silicon valley element) – it's more about culture, hipsters, sport etc.

Additionally, Melbourne has more African-Australians and Greek/Italian-Australians, while Sydney has more Asian-Australians and Middle-Eastern Australians.
