INSIDE Germany’s Most Famous Christmas Market | Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg, Germany at Christmas feels like stepping straight into a storybook. The lights, the music, the smell of roasting nuts, spiced glühwein, and Winter Wärmer, and the way the city square comes alive at night all make it feel a little magical. We spent the day wandering through stalls, tasting traditional treats including their traditional donuts and gingerbread, learning the little traditions that make this market special like the Christmaskind, and soaking in everything that makes Nuremberg one of the most loved Christmas markets in Germany. If you are dreaming of Christmas in Europe, this one belongs on your list!

  1. Well done recording and editing, although your ad from 2:43 to 3:30 was from the christmas market at Munich, Marienplatz in front of the city hall. The only missing thing which would make it even more magical would be filming in the dark evening, with some glittering snow at the hut roofes. But it probably would be harder to record the cozyness.

  2. You don't have to be blonde to become Christkind. In 2019/2020, a girl of Indian descent was even chosen as Christkind (which did not please right-wing extremist circles around the AfD, but was met with great support from the majority of the population).

By the way, it is pronounced more like “Kreest-kint.”

  3. “Think of it as Ms. Universe but Christmas Edition…” – That’s hilarious. Chris.
Thanks for the explanation of the Christkind. Fascinating. I love learning things like that. It kind of reminds me of the festival of St. Lucia’s Day in Scandinavia where a girl about that age dresses up as such and is also blonde but with candles in a wreath atop her head. A great honour.
Really appreciate you showing us the unique difference of this particular Christmas market versus the others as I’ve seen oodles of YouTube and other videos in this market and other ones in Germany and Austria but never heard those unique perspectives in’ any of them. Until now maybe, anytime I hear, Nuremberg, i can’t not think of the Nuremberg Trials. Your perspectives add a lovely note to think on instead.
Be, love your little illo holiday intro and always love all your music choices. Thank you, guys. What an enchanting way to wind up this Saturday.
Btw, you can get chestnuts rotting in an open fire in front of Harrod’s.. or sometimes Walnuts!

  4. I also love Nuremberg and there's lots to see in the city as it used to be a very important city in the middle ages.
If you want to see more cities that are even better preserved in Germany I'd recommend (in no particular order) Dresden, Erfurt, Lübeck, Stralsund, Potsdam, Bamberg, Heidelberg, Freiburg, Münster, Aachen, Würzburg, Tübingen, Weimar, Lüneburg, Regensburg, Augsburg…
As you can tell except for Dresden these are mostly cities with less than 500 000 inhabitants, but they all still offer a lot 😊

  5. Usually I do not correct Youtubers who butcher a German word, because it is normal that you pronounce words according to you own alphabet. But this time I have to explain something!

"Christkind" is pronounced with an "i" like you would do it in "living". If you pronounce it the way you did, anglophone people may hear something along the line of "Christ is so kind"…….but that would be a big misunderstanding.
It is one of our famous German compound words, made from "Christ and Kind" which translates to "Christ and child", so it literally says "Christ-child" and is another word for Baby Jesus. And since a baby would not be able to walk around and bring gifts or do charitable things/tasks, they made it look like a very young angel.
Why a baby you may ask. Well because this character of Baby Jesus carries the spirit of Christmas! His birthday.
Where I grew up all children believed that on the 24rth of December Jesus in the form of a newborn baby flies around and brings gifts for mankind. Nobody would see him because he did it in the middle of the night when we were asleep, and put the gifts beneath the Christmas Tree. Or even bring the tree and the gifts. And if we stayed awake we would not see him because of the magic 🙂
At least this is what my parents told me to prove that there was no need in staying awake at Christmas Eve 😀
And hey! – your pronounciation of "Nürnberg" is top notch! ♥

  6. Why do you pronounce Christkind in English alphabet??? It doesn't make sense at all!
    It's Christkind, not Kraystkiend ffs!!!!

How hard can it be to Google it real quick, get the right pronounciation and do that. Put the name in letters in the video as far as I care, but don't change names!!!
Why do you have to be told that in the first place, huh???

  7. Experiencing the magic of Nuremberg’s Christmas market through your lens is incredible! From unique prune people to warm gingerbread, every detail feels like a fairytale. This city truly captures the essence of holiday spirit. 🎄

  8. Nuremberg is the biggest City of franconia. And franconia is the northern part of Bavaria since 1803.
In WWII the City was heavily bombed. In 1945 the city lay in ruins. It took many years to rebuilt the city to its former beauty. But many beautiful houses got lost forever.

  9. Nuremburg – Nürnberg …

As an idustrial hub – and with very relevant trade routes and logistics – it was heavily bombed in WWII.

What visitors see now – very much is rebuilt after 1945.
Using the regional building style – with the red sand stone.

The building with the "partner cities" – that is the town hall.
    Built in the 1950ies.
Just "uphill" of the christmas market.

  10. If you want a really special Christkindl-Market go to the one in the Castle of the duchess Thurn & Taxis in Regensburg. Apart from that there are three other markets within the Medieval old part of town.

  11. Hi, I have been living in Nürnberg for over 15 years now.

For me the difference to other christmas markets is it's meant to be a very classical christmas market. There is no overstimulating through lots of blinking, multicolored lights which can even add to stress. You have a lot of craftsmanship products, especially wooden material in general, the one with the wallnut heads is one example.

If you come with kids there is a special department of the Christkindlesmarkt on "Hans-Sachs-Platz". Also I would suggest instead of drinking the usual Glühwein on the market you can search for "Winzer Glühwein" – there you can pick more finetuned Glühwein more taylored to your taste and the wine itself is probably better too. 😉

If you want to take it even further with the classical style you can visit the Medieval Christmas Market in Fürth which ist just a few Kilometers down the Pegnitz (the river going through both cities) – best to reach via U-Bahn imo. One of my favorite things to buy on the Christkindlesmarkt is big Marzipan Potatoes. They have them in original size!! (meaning big as a potato) ^^ Now have fun on the other Markets! 🙂

  12. I was there at the exact same time as you guys! This place is awesome! We were there for 3 days, and it was my first visit since I was stationed nearby with the US Army in Erlangen in 1978. This area around Nuremberg had hundreds of thousands of US soldiers stationed around and in the Nuremberg area. Lots of us veterans that were stationed in Germany were walking around as you were filming. I was one of them!

  13. As a Marietta, GA native, Atlanta would have Coca Cola, and CFA are the food and beverage icons. I'd add peanuts likely boiled (and I'm not a fan of boiled peanuts). You could always find boiled peanuts at some gas station on your annual leaf trip to the mountains. The other item would possibly be fried peach pies which would be my choice. I'd be far more excited to see Nuremberg set up a booth at one of the metro Atlanta Christmas markets which are trying to make a go of it. Gluhwein and that ginger bread…. Yes please.

IIRC, Rick Steve's covers the Christkind in his European Christmas special. It is worth the watch and was on YT.
