Hiking Forest of Fontainebleau, France | Historic Trails and Rock Landscapes

Join me on a hike through the Forest of Fontainebleau, France, following the Mont Agui loop, one of the forest’s classic and most scenic routes. This walk takes you through ancient woodland, sandy paths, and striking sandstone rock formations that make Fontainebleau so unique.

Once used as royal hunting grounds for French kings, the Forest has a long and layered history. Its sandstone was quarried for centuries, supplying building stone and paving for Paris. In the 19th century, artists, naturalists, and walkers helped protect the forest, making it one of the birthplaces of modern recreational hiking, with some of Europe’s earliest marked trails. Today, it stands as one of the world’s earliest examples of a managed nature reserve.

Located just south of Paris, the Forest of Fontainebleau is known for its historic trails, diverse landscapes, and quiet atmosphere. The Mont Agui loop offers a rewarding mix of gentle elevation, winding forest paths, and panoramic views from rocky outcrops.

This hike was recorded in May 2025, when the forest was lush and vibrant, making it an ideal time to explore the area on foot.

Whether you enjoy hiking, slow travel, or peaceful nature walks, this video captures the natural beauty and timeless character of Fontainebleau.
