Hello, campers! I recently bought a Teton Mountain Ulta 2p tent before realizing that my husband already had a barely used Marmot Tungsten 3p tent in storage.

The thing is, his tent is from 2014 and was only used a couple times when he first got it. It has been in storage since then, but I recently set it up again with no issues.

My question is: is the Marmot Tungsten too old to use on future trips? A quick google search said that tents usually last around 5-10 years. Do the seams lose their waterproofing or something?

I plan on camping for many years to come, so is it wise to keep the new tent or can the old one last longer?

(The 2p vs. 3p doesn’t make that much of a difference- they are actually pretty close in size and weight.)

  1. Can you set it up outside and leave it for a rain event? That will let you know if you need to reseal the seams and use waterproof spray on it or not.

  2. I’ve had that marmot tent since 2014 and use it at least 10 times a year. The rain fly seams will let a heavy rain weep through but besides that I’ve had zero issues.

I wouldn’t think the waterproofing would give any issues if it’s still new, it’ll be roomier than that 2p as well.

Relax, you don’t want to get 2 tents about deciding on camping gear.

    *I’m so sorry

I have had the Marmot 3p Tungsten for a decade. Now I have 2. Can vouch that it is a good tent for car camping; a bit heavier than I’d like for backpacking but will do the job.

You can reapply waterproofing to the fly.

I’ve had the Marmot Limelight 3P tent but the previous model for probably over a decade. It is still in great condition and works perfect.

  6. I have the next year of that Marmot as a 2P. It’s fine. The main reason they have a lifespan is they tend to get damaged. If it’s been sitting there, at worst it needs the seals taped.

Save your money and use the old one. You’ll like the extra space inside, especially if you’re sharing with another person.
