3 Countries in ONE Day again! Breakfast in Croatia, Lunch in Bosnia, Dinner in Serbia

Summary
We completed the Balkan leg of our incredible four-continent overland Silk Road journey, traversing a profound cross-section of Europe’s heart. This region, historically a bridge between empires, gifted us a day of immense geographic, cultural, and emotional contrasts, all witnessed from our trusted vehicle, Shehzadi.

Our dawn began in Zagreb, Croatia, a Central European capital where the orderly streets of the Austro-Hungarian Lower Town give way to the medieval hilltop quarters of Gradec and Kaptol. From there, we drove east, leaving the Dinaric Alps behind and descending into the vast, fertile expanse of the Pannonian Basin—a geological depression once covered by an ancient sea, now the breadbasket of the region.

Crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina was like entering another world. The landscape transformed into forested hills and river valleys that have long defined its history of resilience. We stopped in Kozarska Dubica, a town steeped in the folklore of the Una River. Legends say Roman soldiers, upon seeing its unique turquoise waters cascading over karst limestone, exclaimed “Una! Una!” (“The one! The one!”).

Here, at the strategic confluence of the Una and the great Sava River, we felt the layers of history. This was a frontier of the Roman Limes and, centuries later, a contested line between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, leaving a rich tapestry of influences visible in the architecture and the warm, direct nature of the people.

A necessary and solemn detour took us to the Jasenovac Memorial Site. In the quiet fields of Donja Gradina, we confronted the 20th century’s darkest echoes. The preserved “Poplar of Horror” and the abstract, powerful “Stone Flower” monument by Bogdan Bogdanović stand as stark reminders of the tragedies that have shaped modern Balkan identity, a crucial chapter in understanding the region’s complex social fabric.

Navigating back through Croatia and crossing at the bustling Bajakovo–Batrovci border—a key node on Corridor X, the vital European transport route—we entered the plains of Serbia. The economy here hums along this highway, with trucks carrying goods from Central Europe to the Balkans and beyond.

We arrived in Belgrade (“Beograd” or “White City”) as the sun set. This fortress-city, perched defiantly at the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, has been destroyed and rebuilt 44 times. Its energy is palpable—a mix of gritty resilience, vibrant nightlife fostered by its famed splavovi (river barges), and a deep-seated inat (defiant spirit). Our day ended in a cozy kafana, where the soulful sounds of starogradska music, a blend of Ottoman and Serbian folk traditions, filled the air as we shared a feast. It was a celebration of survival, joy, and the enduring human connections that travel makes possible.

This journey was more than a road trip; it was a passage through living history, dramatic geology, and the unwavering spirit of the Balkan people.
