Lacoste: Location and Views
Lacoste is a small village in the Luberon mountains, offering incredible views of the valley below. From up here, you can see vineyards, lavender fields, and olive groves stretching across the Provence landscape. Lacoste’s charm comes from its blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Flying a drone over this area reveals a unique perspective of how nature and history coexist harmoniously.
Despite its size, Lacoste is world-famous for two reasons: its picturesque setting and its connection to the infamous Marquis de Sade.
History of Lacoste
The town’s history dates back to ancient times, but it grew significantly during the Middle Ages. In the 11th century, a fortified castle was built on the hill, offering protection and establishing Lacoste as an important town in the region. The medieval character of Lacoste has been preserved, and walking through its streets feels like a journey back in time.
The town’s most famous landmark is the Château de Lacoste, known for its association with the controversial Marquis de Sade. The Marquis lived here in the 18th century, and the castle became the backdrop for his notorious life of scandal and excess. After his arrest, the castle was abandoned, and it fell into ruin during the French Revolution.
The Marquis de Sade’s Castle
During his time in Lacoste, the Marquis de Sade hosted lavish gatherings at the castle and wrote many of his infamous works. His behavior shocked locals, and after he was imprisoned, the château was largely destroyed. Today, the castle has been restored thanks to fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who bought it in the early 2000s. The ruins now host cultural events and theater performances, making Lacoste a vibrant artistic hub.
Lacoste Today: Art and Culture
Lacoste has found new life as a cultural destination, attracting artists and visitors from around the world. Every year, the village hosts art festivals and performances at the Château de Lacoste. Despite its small size, Lacoste has become an important center for creativity and history, blending the old with the new.
Walking through the town, you can feel its rich past, while the surrounding natural beauty provides a peaceful backdrop. The town’s medieval streets remain, offering a glimpse into a world where time seems to have stood still.

Lacoste’s hilltop location offers some of the most stunning views in all of Provence. Flying a drone over the town reveals the majestic beauty of the Luberon Valley, as well as nearby villages like Bonnieux and Ménerbes.
