Thailand with $10,000 – Episode 2: Chiang Mai

Episode two of my grand fun-enmployment adventure through south east Asia. On this episode we leave Bangkok on a sleeper train with Chiang Mai as our destination. The train cost was $43 per person, but I bought the tickets before leaving Oakland so I won’t be adding it to the overall budget. Chiang Mai is an area in Thailand I could see myself living, it’s such a cool little city. It’s a great example of cool Thai culture, with just a perfect mix of nature, close activities/adventure, and city life to keep a city boy like myself happy.

We took a cooking class and I made some of my favorite thai dishes including stir-fried basil with chicken. A cooking class is a MUST do activity for any new country you visit as its a great way to acclimate yourself to the culture and cuisine, plus you can hopefully leave with a new recipe or two to make when you get back home.

We also volunteered at an elephant sanctuary for a day, this was really important for us to do as my daughter loves elephants and also it was a chance to do some good, as this sanctuary cares for rescued elephants from surrounding Thai cities and even from the surrounding south East Asian countries, notably Cambodia. Something to note if you travel to Thailand is to be wary of what animal attractions you participate in and pay for. Many of these attractions abuse animals. For example, elephant riding is very bad for the elephants’ physical and mental health. Another example is tiger petting, where the tigers are often heavily sedated so they don’t bite your face off. If animal welfare is important to you, make sure to do your research on which establishment you’re sending your money to.
