We went down to Nahal Refaim the day after a heavy rain and discovered a completely different world. This stream is usually dry, one of those classic Judean Hills riverbeds that only hint at water. This time, there was water flowing. Real water. Moving, sounding, alive.

We chose to do a circular hike, and from the very beginning it felt special. The valley was filled with green, a deep and vibrant green that felt more like Europe and much less like Israel. The slopes, usually rocky and pale, were covered with grass and fresh growth. The air was cool and clean, carrying the smell of wet earth and leaves.

Water ran gently along the channel, forming small pools and shallow crossings. In places it flowed quietly, and in others it picked up speed, reminding us how powerful even a short winter rain can be. Walking beside the stream, listening to it and following its curves, felt like witnessing a rare moment that would disappear in a matter of days or weeks.

The flowering season had already begun. Small blossoms appeared along the path, adding touches of color to the green landscape. Everything felt fresh and renewed, as if the valley itself was waking up after a long sleep. This is a side of Nahal Refaim that few people get to see, and only for a short time each year.

As we completed the loop, tired but happy, it was clear this was not just another hike. It was one of those days when nature gives you a gift if you arrive at the right moment. Water in a dry stream, green hills near Jerusalem, and the quiet joy of walking through a landscape that feels briefly transformed. An unforgettable experience, born from rain.
