The 10 Most Epic Travel Destinations in Africa | Solo Backpacking Africa

From vast deserts to snowy mountaintops, dense jungles to endless salt flats, sparkling waters and pristine beaches along the Indian Ocean, and much, much more. This solo backpacking journey through East Africa and Southern Africa took me to ten countries: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Each destination was wildly different from the previous, with its own bucket list attractions and unique cultural activities.

Nothing can prepare you for Africa’s sheer diversity of breathtaking landscapes, countless wildlife encounters, and bucket list experiences that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. This trip was a challenge in many ways, but a rewarding one, and ranking very highly among the favorite backpacking trips I’ve ever taken. These are ten of my favorite travel destinations that I visited on this epic adventure through Africa.

  1. Great video!
How long was your trip? And what was your approximate budget? I’m planning on doing a backpacking trip as well, so this is very helpful.

I’m also glad you added Tanzania and Uganda to your top favourites! I visited both long time ago and I still dream of the places I visited.

  2. Africa is such a gorgeous continent! It's so difficult to say what my favorite places are in Africa because the entire continent is lovely, but I'd say the Ngorongoro, the Maasai Mara, Zanzibar (specifically Stone Town), Victoria Falls and Cape Town are amongst my favorites for sure. I haven't been to Uganda yet, but it looks lovely too!

  3. I’d like to compile a list of a few questions to send you. I just finished solo backpacking to country number 117. And I’m revisiting Africa this fall, but I’m visiting South Central and east for the animal migration.
Most of my questions are about time, travel, and reliability of travel as well as hostels

  4. Really great report, thanks. Surprised such an experienced traveller carries so much gear. I have backpacked most countries in the world with 6Kgs….inc snorkelling gear and musical instruments. I see people with skyscraper backpacks taking their dirty laundry to exotic parts of the world…. killing themselves!☘️🇮🇪🦘

  5. Great video and descriptions. I like the mix of known spots and some underrated but great visits. Hopefully you’ll make it to Mozambique sometime!
