I've heard a lot of mixed (actually mostly negative) reviews about 7 adams recently, but my friend wanted to go to a cheaper tasting menu and I thought I might as well try it out for myself. I figured if i'm gonna give it a review, I might as well go all out and do the chef's counter.
The ambiance is loud and bustling and the space is small and tight – especially when you're seated at the chef's counter, you're almost elbow to elbow with the people next to you. It detracted from my experience maybe a litttttle bit but overall I always care more about the food itself so onto that.
Food:
- Tamari Meringue (7.5/10) – The meringue itself crumbled almost immediately and had a sharp cheesy kind of taste that paired well with the raw fish.
- Feuille de brick Cylinder (7.5/10) – Thin crispy outside with raw meat(?) on the inside. Simple flavors and textures together, this is a pretty common small bite but overall it was good.
- Plankton Rosette (7/10) – Rosette cracker on top of a mixture of dungeness crab, caviar, and some cream. The rosette itself has like almost funion kind of texture. Really pretty dish and tasted good but lacked some flavor complexity. It's a fun dish but limited by the texture of the rosette and how it falls apart after you bite into it.
- Yellowfin Tuna (6.5/10) – Yellow fin tuna slices with a mandarin/horseradish sauce. I really wanted to like this dish a lot more, but some parts of it fell flat. The tuna itself was fresh and clean tasting, but honestly was a bit bland? The sauce at the bottom was bright and acidic, but there was not enough sauce to really coat the fish.
- Beet Ice (6.5/10) – Beet granada with sunflower cream. I liked the granada part as it had a bit of sweetness and it was refreshing, but honestly I did not like the cream underneath. It had kind of a weird earthy taste that I did not like and a bit of a gritty texture.
- Bread (8.5/10) – Nice, hot, soft japanese milk bread and some butter to go with it. Not much else to say.
- Saffron Cavatelli (7.5/10) – Smoked little neck clam and trout roe pasta. The trout roe added a nice little saltiness and pop to some bites and you can taste the smokiness throughout each bite. Pasta was cooked nicely too.
- Black Cod (8.5/10) – Crispy skin black cod on top of sea urchin, daikon, and shitake. The skin was cooked amazingly well where it was still very crispy but broke apart easily and cleanly. Cod also cooked almost perfectly – flaky and melty (but I think i've had better). Sea urchin and sea urchin foam gave the dish a subtle sweetness and umami flavor, but the daikon provided a bit of sourness to balance it out. Overall I enjoyed the dish a lot, but it felt more like it shined with each ingredient individually, rather than the ingredients coming together.
- The Buffalo Wing (3/10) – Im not gonna lie, this was pretty terrible. It's a chicken wing stuffed with sausage, but the buffalo sauce covering it is wayyyyy too salty and spicy. Each bite feels like you're taking a shot of frank's red hot. I was struggling to finish this.
- Dry Aged Lamb (7/10) – Lamb was fine but not as tender as I would have hoped and the dry-aged flavor did not shine through that much. The sauce did not really add much either. It wasn't a bad dish but i've definitely had way better lamb dishes.
- Orange and Bay Leaf (8.5/10) – Ice cream, on top of mandarin poppy seed cake and honey brittle. I loved this dessert. The crunchiness of the brittle and poppy seed, smoothness of the ice cream, and the softness of the cake all came together. You also have the sweetness of the ice cream, citrus of the mandarin, and slightly saltiness from the poppy seed. Great balance of flavors and textures.
- Cocoa Black Sesame (7.5/10) – Pretty similar concept to the previous dessert, but with chocolate/cocoa/lemon instead. Underneath the black sesame brittle is meyer lemon curd. I really liked the first few bites, but then slowly the lavender became a bit overpowering for me. Ended up feeling like a worse version of the first dessert.
- Box of cookies (N/A) – Three really small, but good, cookies.
Overall 7 Adams went almost exactly how I expected – mostly good dishes but overall nothing that absolutely blew me away. I think most of the dishes were aesthetically pleasing but some improvement could be done in overall dish execution and dish coherence. I really hated that buffalo wing dish lol

I haven’t done the chef’s counter tasting menu, but I feel the same about the more regular tasting menu. It’s not amazing, but a good deal relative to the prices in the SF Bay Area.
