In short, a sushi master from Japan previously owned a tiny restaurant in a suberb (Meanwood) on the outskirts of Leeds, called Hana Matsuri. Michelin recommended, but no star.

A couple of years a go, he opened a flagship restaurant in the city centre. We payed a visit last weekend.

I think it deserves a star. It's a big step up from what was on offer at the old restaurant. It used to be outstanding, but the chef and his team have really pushed it to another level. I've never been to Japan, but it's a totally different level to anything I've tried in the UK or elsewhere. Also, the Sake pairing was outstanding and seemed like exceptionally good value.

I didn't manage to grab a picture of every course, but here's what I have!

Would love someone to translate the message on the menu, too. I can only offer an upvote and virtual love, though.

  1. Looks great. I like that they put the origin of every piece of fish on the menu; usually it’s pretty scattershot when they tell you at the omakases I go to. Putting the wifi password at the bottom is pretty funny.

Claude AI claims the message basically translates to “Thank you for entrusting [your meal to us]” and then a signature (sorry if we’re anti-AI, just was curious myself).

  2. Looks interesting. Is it common for omakase places in the UK to serve mostly UK sourced fish?

I went to Hana Matsuri a few times when I lived in Leeds and it was incredible – so lovely to see Sushi Nakamura featured in this sub!
