Went here after experiencing gion nishikawa, which was really amazing (see other thread)

If kikinoi roan is **, nishikawa deserves the 3rd star

The meal wasn’t as personable as nishikawa in both service, the room, the chefs working, and the menu.

The dishes were good, but at nishikawa, I felt a connection to the seasons, the terroir and the chef in the menu and each course. Roan felt a bit disconnected. Although it did get better throughout the meal.

I don’t drink – and at nishikawa, to sub for the sake, they provided a shiso extract. At roan, they just omitted the course

The highlight dishes here was the cured egg yolk & tuna, fugu sashimi & the tofu set in citrus. Burdock soup was great.

They made a rice log with the leftover rice for me to takeaway, which was nice.

It was a good meal, not as memorable as nishikawa

I left here and did all the steps to the top of mt inari at fushimi inari.

  1. Did you find the amount of food slightly overwhelming? I have a pretty large appetite and ordered the medium B course for dinner. By the time we hit the rice course, I was absolutely crushed and could barely touch it. They kindly created onigiri with the rice/sea bream and I took it on my hike up fushimi inari the next day!
