We Travelled Halfway Around The World In 3 Months … Without Flying!
How do 2 retirees travel from Ontario, Canada, all the way to Singapore without taking a single flight? In this video, we’re breaking down the reality of our 3-month “slow travel” journey across the world.
From crossing the Pacific by ship to navigating the trains and buses of Southeast Asia, we’re sharing the essential lessons that got us halfway around the world without setting foot in an airport.
If you’re planning a nomadic retirement or a long-term trip through Malaysia, Thailand, or Vietnam, this guide covers the “boots-on-the-ground” logistics you won’t find on a booking site.
In this video, we cover:
– How Cruises and Visas determine our destinations and durations
– Leveraging AI to help with planning and logistics
– Finding a community for sharing and support
00:46 – How we got from Canada to Thailand

ChatGPT Prompts:
We don’t ask ChatGPT to “plan a trip.” We give it constraints first, so it plans like a logistics assistant, not a travel brochure.
If you want realistic overland routes (no flying), try starting with a prompt like this:
——————————————————–
I want help planning an overland journey between two places using realistic, reliable transport. Only suggest routes and transport that are currently operating and commonly used; clearly flag anything uncertain.
Start: [city + country]
End: [city + country]
Constraints:
• No flying
• Prefer trains first, buses only when necessary and no overnight buses
• Break long journeys into manageable days
• Suggest logical overnight stops based on transport hubs, not sightseeing
• Border crossings must be well-established and realistic for foreigners
What I want:
• A step-by-step route, segment by segment
• For each segment: transport type, rough duration, and why it makes sense
• Notes on when train vs bus is the better option
Please avoid:
• Marathon same-day routes
• Vague advice like “take a bus” without explanation
• Tourist detours unless they actually improve logistics
——————————————————–
How to Use This
• Start with this prompt to get a backbone route
• Then refine by adjusting overnight stops, swapping buses for trains, or pacing days
• Think in segments and hubs, not straight-line distance
This approach is how we plan long-distance travel without flying and avoid routes that look good on paper but fall apart in real life.

That was a great recap video. Congrats once again, enjoy.
We are "no fly" full-time nomads too and we enjoyed your video. We loved our one-way repositioning cruise to Europe that left the US in April and we have spent most of our time in Albania utilizing trains buses and ferries to arrive here. In the off-season, we had monthly stays in Croatia, Montenegro and Italy. We love being "slomads". Safe travels 👍😊
Really great tips!
Awesome video guys! 👊🏾 Still AMAZED at traveling the world without boarding a plane. 🤯
Very informative Andrea and Keith, thank you. As a "planner" , I was curious as to what you had to book in advance and balance that with a nomadic journey. I never thought of using ChatGPT as "travel agent" !!! Could I ask how you planned for this adventure from a budget perspective?
