We booked an organized tour and spent the whole day chasing views of the sandstone pillars and cliff-top monasteries… photos don’t really prepare you for the scale (especially under moody winter skies).
This trip also meant a lot to me personally. Last year I wrote my master’s thesis on iconography, and seeing Meteora’s visual world up close (icons, frescoes, symbols) made it feel like more than just a scenic stop. Absolutely breathtaking experience.
Recommend to take whole day to visit at least 3-4 monastaries and spend great time in Meteora.
Dress code tip: men need long pants + sleeves; women need a skirt below the knee + covered shoulders… at least our guide told us.
Entry should be 5 Euro per person / per monastery.
