12 Adelaide To King Island – January 2021

After a year of lockdowns due to COVID, the borders started to open up at the end of 2020. So we were able to return to Free Ascent in January 2021, where it had been sitting in a marina, unused for a year.

I sorted the boat out and with daughter Julia, holidaying from Europe, set off for an interesting sail to King Island, the closest bit of Tasmania territory to South Australia. A minor problem with the boat meant a short diversion to Kangaroo Island where we did some tourist exploring before continuing on down the South Australia coast to Portland in Victoria – just across the border.

Then the long overnight sail down to the Grassy harbour on the east side of King Island, a harbour I last sailed to way back in 1974 in Dreamtime. Then Julia an I did a short tour around King Island by car before she had to fly out back to mainland Australia, then on back to Europe.
