4K Japan Walking Tour 2026: Tokyo Yotsuya, Kagurazaka & Tokyo Dome City

This time, I walked from Yotsuya through Kagurazaka to Tokyo Dome City—about 3.5 hours covering some of central Tokyo’s most varied neighborhoods in a single continuous route.

YOTSUYA: STARTING POINT

The walk begins at Yotsuya Station, a busy stop on the JR Chuo Line and Tokyo Metro lines. The area around Yotsuya has that central Tokyo mix: government buildings, offices, schools, residential streets all within a few blocks. Kameoka Hachiman Shrine sits nearby—a neighborhood shrine tucked into the urban fabric, easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.

From Yotsuya, the walk heads toward Kagurazaka via Ushigome—passing through local shopping streets and residential areas that don’t usually make it into Tokyo travel guides.

KAGURAZAKA: THE INTERESTING PART

Kagurazaka is the highlight of this walk. It’s a hillside neighborhood that used to be a geisha district, and some of that older character survives in the narrow stone-paved side streets branching off the main shopping street. The backstreets here are genuinely worth exploring—small restaurants, old buildings, the kind of lanes that feel different from most of Tokyo.

Akagi Shrine is an interesting stop along the way. The shrine building was redesigned in 2010 by architect Kengo Kuma, so you get this modern glass-and-wood structure sitting in a traditional shrine setting. It works better than it sounds.

The main Kagurazaka shopping street runs uphill from Iidabashi Station. Shops, cafes, and restaurants line both sides, with a mix of French restaurants (the area has a small French connection going back decades) and Japanese establishments. It gets busy on weekends.

IIDABASHI TO SUIDOBASHI

From Kagurazaka the walk descends to Iidabashi, where the Kanda River runs alongside the station. The river has walking paths and some greenery—a small break from pure urban streets. Iidabashi is a busy transit hub with office buildings and commercial development.

Suidobashi is one stop further, known primarily as the station closest to Tokyo Dome. The walk passes through the Kanda River area between these two stations, which has that slightly older commercial character of central Tokyo’s less-touristy zones.

TOKYO DOME CITY

Tokyo Dome City is the amusement complex built around Tokyo Dome baseball stadium. The area has a roller coaster (you can see and hear it from surrounding streets), a spa facility, hotels, and various entertainment venues. On game days it gets very crowded—this walk shows what it looks like as a destination rather than just a stadium.

The surrounding Hakusan-dori area brings the walk back toward central Tokyo’s main streets, passing through Nishi-Kanda and finishing at Iidabashi pedestrian bridge over the Kanda River.

WHY THIS ROUTE WORKS

Yotsuya to Tokyo Dome City isn’t an obvious walking route—most people would take trains between these areas. But walking shows you what sits between the famous spots: local shopping streets, neighborhood shrines, the Kanda River paths, the residential areas around Kagurazaka. The 3.5 hours covers a lot of central Tokyo’s less-documented geography while hitting recognizable landmarks along the way.

If you’re planning a Tokyo trip and want to preview the Kagurazaka area specifically, this walk shows you the main street, the backstreets, and the neighborhoods surrounding it in detail.
