The Road from Jericho to Beth-El — a virtual walking tour of this famous Biblical route

Rediscover this famous biblical route. Dr. Peter Ofman will take us on a virtual tour, connecting the verses of Tanach with his photographs of the modern landscape of the road today, and of the sights along it.

Dr. Ofman is a professional cardiologist and an amateur traveler and photographer. He makes frequent trips to Israel, where he hires private guides to help him carefully walk and photograph places that are historically important but not frequented by tourists.

The road between Jericho and Bethel is described in diverse places throughout the Bible. For example::

    1.
When Abram and Lot separated, Lot took this road from Bethel to reach the Jordan river valley.

    2.
Yehoshua went up this road several times — twice to conquer the city of Ai, and once to help the citizens of Givon.

    3.
The road later served as a border between the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judea.

If you have been to Israel a few times and covered the standard tourist attractions, but now want to get to know the Land of Israel in more depth. This virtual tour is for you.

If when you study the Torah portion verse by verse, it can be hard to visualize many of the geographical references, a picture is worth a thousand words, and Dr. Ofman’s descriptions and photographs of his discoveries walking along this ancient road will be illuminating.

There is still a lot to be discovered in the Bible with the use of maps and archeology, and by personally walking the ancient routes in modern times. That’s what Dr. Ofman has done.

So pick up your imaginary backpack and walk the Tanach (Bible) chapter by chapter.

The presentation was given August 26, 2025 at the historic Adams Street Shul in Newton MA; and also world-wide via Zoom.
