Just about an hour from Paris, this château actually inspired Versailles. Built in the 17th century for Nicolas Fouquet, it set the standard for the architecture and gardens that Louis XIV later reused.

After a lavish event held here, Fouquet was arrested… and the king took his entire team to create Versailles.
