Perhaps you can find small moments of happiness in France? / Publicity Caravane / TDF in Caen

This video shows a publicity caravan of Tour de France passing in front of the Men’s Abbey (Abbaye aux Hommes) in Caen, Norumandy, France. The publicity caravan passes along the course about an hour before the Tour de France cyclists arrive. The existence of the ublicity caravan of Tour de France is not well known outside of France. However, many people gather in search of the prizes that the publicity caravan hands out. The roadsides are filled with an excitement comparable to when cyclists pass by.

On 9 July 2025, the Tour de France was held in Caen for the first time since 2006. An individual time trial was held on this day. The course started in Caen, headed northwest to Thaon, and then returned to Caen. Therefore, in Caen, we were able to see both the start and the finish line. This channel has already shared a video of the publicity caravan passing by the Châteu de Caen. This was a scene from just after the publicity caravan had departed from the starting point of the course.

This video captures the publicity caravan which returned to Caen after traveling to Thaon. In other words, the citizens of Caen were able to enjoy the publicity caravan twice.

The building visible in the background of the video is the Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Caen. This is a bbey, also known as Abbaye aux Hommes. This was founded by William the Conqueror in 1063. Inside the church with the towers is the tomb of William the Conqueror. The monastery building was renovated in the 19th century to serve as a high school, and has been used as the city hall since the 1960s.

On the other side of the course, you can see another church. This is the Church of Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux (Old Saint Stephen’s Church). This church was probably founded in the 10th century. The word “old” was added to the name to distinguish it from the Abbey of Saint-Étienne, which was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. After the French Revolution, the church was deconsecrated and ceased to function as a parish church, so it fell into disuse. It was designated a historical building in 1840, but due to inadequate management and deterioration up to that point, it was closed to the public in 1844. The majority of the nave was destroyed in an air raid in 1944. No restoration work had been carried out since then, but the city of Khan began restoration work at the end of 2025. The reopening of the Church of Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux is scheduled for spring 2027.
