Place Masséna, the main and most famous historic square in Nice. The striking black-and-white tiling covers the entire pedestrian expanse of the plaza. The square is enclosed by grand, 19th-century buildings painted in a signature deep red/ochre hue with classic Mediterranean green shutters. The monumental water feature on the right is the Fontaine du Soleil (Fountain of the Sun). At its center stands a massive, 7-meter-tall marble statue of Apollo, surrounded by bronze sculptures representing different planets (Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Saturn) depicted as mythological figures on horses.
