Sanssouci Palace endured the 1970s as a preserved historical gem.
Amidst the Cold War, the East German government recognized the cultural and tourism significance of Frederick II’s estate. The 1970s Context—Restoration and Opening: Despite the GDR’s economic constraints, the palace, its park, and its famous terraced vineyards underwent maintenance and restoration. The site was already one of East Germany’s major attractions and most popular holiday destinations.
The entire complex (including the New Palace and the New Chambers) was preserved as a national heritage site long before its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
