Shinhan Life has built a system that detects suspected voice phishing transactions in real time and blocks losses before victims file reports.
The insurer said on the 4th that it has introduced a dedicated voice phishing response system, developed by upgrading its existing fraud detection system (FDS).
The system analyzes access and transaction data in real time across key stages of a customer’s activity, from the moment of login through applications for insurance payouts, to determine whether a transaction is abnormal. Depending on the level of risk, it requires additional authentication or restricts the transaction in real time, while notifying the customer and sending a text message.
Shinhan Life spent about five months on the upgrade, starting in March. The company added integrated monitoring functions and a visual management interface, allowing it to oversee the entire process from detection to response. The system can also add or adjust detection scenarios when new voice phishing methods emerge.
The system is linked to Shinhan Financial Group’s joint voice phishing response framework, allowing information on suspected voice phishing gathered by group affiliates to be fed into the FDS. The move strengthens the company’s response in line with the revised Special Act on the Prevention of Loss Caused by Telecommunications-based Financial Fraud and Refund of Loss, which allows financial companies, telecommunications carriers and investigative authorities to share information on suspected voice phishing.
“As voice phishing methods grow more varied and sophisticated, it is important to detect abnormal transactions quickly and respond in a timely manner,” an official at Shinhan Life said. “Based on our dedicated FDS and the group’s joint response framework, we will continue to build an environment that safely protects customer assets.”
