The Pittsburgh Pirates go for their third straight win and a series victory over the Los Angeles Angels at home on Saturday night. The Pirates are trying to make a last-stand push for the playoffs after winning five of their last six games. Pittsburgh is 4.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final NL Wild Card spot, but the Pirates have four other teams ahead of them for a chance at the playoffs. The Pirates can improve to .500 on the season if they are able to sweep the Angels this weekend in their only series against Los Angeles. That comes after a 1-0 pitcher’s duel on Friday night to win the opener. Pittsburgh is now 70-72, and it is 37-33 at home. The Angels are trying to end a three-game losing streak tonight, and LA has lost 10 of its last 11 games. Los Angeles now has the worst record in the league, sitting at 53-88 overall and 23-44 on the road. At least Angels fans had the good news this week that Stan Kronke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams and others, made a $4 billion agreement to purchase the team from Arte Moreno. Pittsburgh will be the -181 favorite to win this series in Game 2 on Saturday. That has a lot to do with the Pirates starting Braxton Ashcraft, who is 14-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 160.1 innings. The Angels will counter with Yusei Kikuchi, who is looking for his first win of the season with a 0-5 record and a 5.65 ERA in 43 innings.

Jared Jones took over for the Pirates in the opener to improve to 3-6 on the season, after going six scoreless innings on Friday. Jones only gave up three hits in the start, and he struck out nine batters. The bullpen was also sharp the rest of the way, only giving up one more hit on the night. Ryan Johnson also pitched well for the Angels, but he fell to 3-8, even though he pitched six strong innings while only giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts. His only blemish of the game was an RBI double from left fielder Jake Magnum in the second inning. Pittsburgh only had five hits the whole game. Mason Montgomery shut down the ninth inning for his ninth save of the season.
