The froze in time. But why?
What if an entire wedding celebration had been turned to stone?

Near Kardzhali, in Bulgaria’s Eastern Rhodopes, pale rock figures rise from the earth like guests frozen in the middle of a ceremony. This is Kamenna Svatba — the Stone Wedding.
The legend begins with a young man from the village of Zimzelen, who fell in love with a girl from a neighbouring village. On their wedding day, a joyful procession set out through the mountains. Then a powerful wind lifted the bride’s veil, revealing her extraordinary beauty. When a terrible thought crossed the father-in-law’s mind, the wedding guests were transformed into stone.
Today, the landscape appears almost like a gathering of people. White, pale pink, and light green rock figures stand together, some more than 10 metres high. Their colours come from different minerals, while their unusual silhouettes were shaped by wind, water, and time.
The geological story is just as remarkable as the legend. These formations are volcanic tuffs with a rhyolite composition, shaped around 35 to 40 million years ago. What looks like a petrified wedding is also a geological wonder created over immense spans of time.
But the story does not end with the guests.
The heartbroken groom begged the wind to turn him to stone as well. The wind granted his wish, and a small pool beside the rocks is said to have formed from his tears.
Declared a protected area in 1974, Kamenna Svatba remains one of Bulgaria’s most memorable natural landmarks — a place where folklore and geology stand side by side. For anyone exploring hidden gems in Bulgaria, the Eastern Rhodopes, or off-the-beaten-path destinations in Eastern Europe, this is a landscape filled with colour, mystery, and atmosphere.
A wedding that never ended — only changed form.
