Lorenzo, on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace, has announced it will close its doors for the final time on Sunday, November 22, ending 41 years of service.

The family-run Italian restaurant first opened in 1985 and has become a well-known fixture in the area, welcoming generations of diners for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other special occasions.

In a Facebook post the Lorenzo family announced the closure of the business and thanked customers for their support over the past four decades.

In the statement, the family said Lorenzo had been “so much more than a restaurant”, describing it as their life’s work and a place that had brought generations together over food and shared memories.

The family said rising costs and the challenges facing independent restaurants had made it increasingly difficult to continue operating.

They also revealed that founder Lorenzo, who will celebrate his 88th birthday in November, is looking forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying a slower pace of life.

Lorenzo’s told customers it will remain open until November 22, with the family encouraging customers to visit during its final weeks and share their memories.

Following the announcement, the restaurant said it had been “overwhelmed” by the response from customers.

In a follow-up Facebook post, the family said the “hundreds of beautiful messages, comments, memories and kind words” had touched their hearts and highlighted just how much the restaurant had meant to the community over the years.

Over 204 comments were left on the original closure announcement, with the overwhelming majority expressing sadness at the loss of what many described as a Crystal Palace institution.

The dominant theme was a sense of nostalgia, with dozens of people describing the closure as “heartbreaking”, “the end of an era” and the loss of “another Crystal Palace landmark”.

One customer wrote: “Crystal Palace won’t be the same without it,” while another simply described the restaurant as “an institution”.

Many of the comments reflected the role Lorenzo’s played in family life, with diners recalling birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, first dates and Christmas celebrations held at the restaurant over the years.

One person said: “My most favourite restaurant in Crystal Palace, where I had my first date with my future wife.”

Another wrote: “My kids grew up with birthdays at Lorenzo’s,” while a third added: “For decades this has been the place I take my mum and loved ones for special occasions.”

Long-time customers also shared memories of visiting since the restaurant first opened in 1985, with several saying they had returned regularly for 30 or even 40 years.
