SYRACUSE, N.Y. — For the first time in nearly 50 years, a Democrat representing Syracuse has won reelection to Congress.
Rep. John Mannion secured a second term representing New York’s 22nd Congressional District, a historically Republican-leaning district where voters have backed both parties. His reelection marks a milestone for Democrats in Central New York, but Mannion now faces the challenge of holding and expanding support in a politically divided district.
Asked how he plans to maintain support and win over voters who did not back him, Mannion said, “I’m here to represent everybody. I always have, and I always will continue to be.”
Mannion pointed to high costs of living and health care as major issues facing Central New Yorkers, and said rebuilding trust in government must come first.
“We need serious anti-corruption legislation to be advanced…not just for this president, because of any president. Because of anyone who is in a position of power…the people don’t trust the leaders in this country, they don’t trust our government more than ever before,” Mannion said.
He also said restoring federal health care funding will be one of his first priorities.
With proposals likely requiring cooperation with Republicans and President Trump, Mannion acknowledged that voters will expect results. “What it is time for, and what I do believe that the democratic party and it’s members must do is deliver for the people…they need to see we’re a party of ideas and a party of action…” he said.
Mannion said his priorities include making life more affordable for families, though he expects disagreements with the president. Even with Democrats taking control of Congress, passing legislation could still require Trump’s support or enough votes to override a veto.
