The caves of Sare are carved into Atxurio mountain, an immense limestone deposit in Sare. The Leza cave is about 2 million years ago. The cave occurs in a typical geological formation. Immense spaces, an entrance porch amongst the largest in Aquitaine, and also traces of our ancestors’ lives.

The 900-meter path features sound and light animations. The guided tour lasts 45 minutes and teaches you about the geological characteristics of the site, its qualities as a habitat for the last 10,000 years, the mythology surrounding life in the cave, and the origins of the Basque people.

There is also a museum on-site, where you can learn more about human evolution from prehistory to today. Learn more of J. M. Barandiaran, eminent Basque prehistorian, and ethnologist.
