Cavalese is the main historic town of Val di Fiemme and is located about 1000 meters above sea level at the beginning of the valley, where it gives way to grassy rolling hills towards the north. The village is situated in a great sunny location, above river Avisio that flows through the valley descending from Val di Fassa. A delightful village surrounded by mountain peaks and pine forests, with a beautiful view to the south towards the jagged mountain range of Lagorai bordering the southern horizon, while to the east are the beautiful Dolomite peaks of Cimon de la Pala and Cima Vezzana in the Pale di San Martino. Bridging the gap to the north are the peaks of Monte Tolargo, Punta La Cùgola, il Corno Nero e la Pala di Santa.
Cavalese is a popular winter sports resort and an ideal starting point for hiking in the mountain range of Lagorai and the peaks that surround the valley.
