1941 years ago, Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city of Pompeo under a layer of ash and rock 15fr deep. Pompei was an ancient Roman town just east of Naples, in the Campanian region of Italy. It was founded between the 8th and 6th century B.C. roughly the same time period as the foundation of Rome. Pompei was located on a river and was close to the sea which helped it grow into a major trading port.The greek once ruled the area around Pompei but between 310and 302 BC Pompei was conquered by Rome. Pompei was a resort town for many upper-class Romans who had vacation homes here. About 15 years before the eruption there was a large earthquake that leveled parts of the city. Many feared future earthquakes and never returned to their home in Pompeii.The people at the time did not know that Mount Vesuvius was a volcano
The day before the devastating eruption, Mount Vesuvius began showing signs that it was waking. By the time of the deadly events the next day, thousands had already educated the city. Around lunchtime on August 24th A.D.79, Mount Vesuvius blew its top spewing millions of tons of ash and rock into the atmosphere 12 miles high. The eruption lasted 24 hours. When it was over Pompeiwas buried deep in volcanic ash and over 2000 people had died.
