Bosnia and Herzegovina: Top Places To Visit. Bosnia is a destination that has somehow remained relatively unexplored and off the beaten path, much to the delight of those who include a stop there on their Balkans itinerary.

If there’s one place that’s not to be missed on a Bosnia visit, it’s enchanting Mostar. Hands down the prettiest of all Bosnian cities, it’s beloved for its picturesque bridge Stari Most which arches across the Neretva river right in the center of the old town. Originally built in the 1500s, it was destroyed in the war and had to be painstakingly rebuilt to its former glory. The hard work paid off, and it’s now one of the country’s most iconic monuments and a highlight of travelling in Bosnia.

Srebrenica War Memorial Park – Over 8,300 Bosnian men were executed by the Bosnian Serb Army in the Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina enclave of Srebrenica. These killings became the single largest massacre to take place on the European continent since World War II. Every July 11, the families participate in a ceremony of remembrance and burial of the remains identified.

When you visit Trebinje you’re visiting a real slice of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Putting its picturesque riverfront, lively promenades, well-lived in Old Town, and beatific mountain scenery aside, what makes the place special is its feel. When you’re here, there’s no need to ask where do the locals go because the town itself is the answer. Just being in Trebinje, you’re soaking up more of the day-to-day local culture than you would in any other touristic city.

The national capital of Sarajevo has a well preserved old quarter, ‘Sebilj’ – the iconic 18th-century wooden fountain. Storied Sarajevo and its war-torn past makes it a fascinating place for history buffs. The Sarajevo incident refers to the events surrounding the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Archduchess Sophie during a state visit to Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. It is traditionally regarded as the immediate catalyst for the First World War.
