Tulipes Provençales
Location: https://goo.gl/maps/Zd99nGGQ5Zd3UAjcA (There are several fields nearby)
GPS Coordinates: 43.936771, 5.879773
The Tulip-fields are to be found near the village of La Brillanne on the main road towards Lurs and Forcalquier (coming from La Brillanne). During the bloom, Tulips will be for sale at the roundabout of La Brillanne, near the Tulip-fields themselves.
The owner of the Tulip-fields has strictly forbidden to enter the fields by foot, bike, or by car. You will have to park your car in front of the fields on the roadside wherever safe and possible and watch the fields without entering them. If people are still entering the fields, it will be at their own risk, as the owner might not be far away.
Tulips should be in full bloom during Easter-weekend (April 3rd for 2021) and harvested/cut 10 days later approximatively.
Originally growing wild in the valleys of the Tian Shan Mountains, tulips were cultivated in Constantinople as early as 1055. By the 15th century, tulips were among the most prized flowers; becoming the symbol of the Ottomans. While tulips had probably been cultivated in Persia from the tenth century, they did not come to the attention of the West until the sixteenth century, when Western diplomats to the Ottoman court observed and reported on them. They were rapidly introduced into Europe and became a frenzied commodity during Tulipmania. Tulips were frequently depicted in Dutch Golden Age paintings, and have become associated with the Netherlands, the major producer for world markets, ever since. In the seventeenth century Netherlands, during the time of the Tulip mania, an infection of tulip bulbs by the tulip breaking virus created variegated patterns in the tulip flowers that were much admired and valued. While truly broken tulips do not exist anymore.
Tulipmania (Dutch: tulpenmanie) was a period during the Dutch Golden Age when contract prices for some bulbs of the recently introduced and fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels, and then dramatically collapsed in February 1637. It is generally considered to have been the first recorded speculative bubble or asset bubble in history. In many ways, the tulip mania was more of a hitherto unknown socio-economic phenomenon than a significant economic crisis. It had no critical influence on the prosperity of the Dutch Republic, which was one of the world’s leading economic and financial powers in the 17th century, with the highest per capita income in the world from about 1600 to 1720. The term “tulip mania” is now often used metaphorically to refer to any large economic bubble when asset prices deviate from intrinsic values.
