Monte Rey
With a six hour and half hours drive from San Diego, Monterey boasts of bustling city life at the bay. It is famous for its incredible aquarium which is partly interactive and partly operates as an animal conservation facility.
Monterey celebrates sea life on the beautiful California coast.
Santa Cruz
Just south of the Bay Area, Santa Cruz is a laid-back, quirky hippie town rich with things to do and see. From the beach boardwalk to the lush redwoods dotted with neon yellow banana slugs, Santa Cruz can be a quick day trip from San Diego, but it also makes a great weekend getaway.
Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is probably the favorite summertime weekend trip destination for the people from San Diego. It is around a eight and half hours drive from San Diego. You can visit North or South Lake Tahoe or even explore the Nevada side of the lake! You can visit Emerald Bay, rent a boat and enjoy yourself with your people. Adventure seekers can also try Kayaking or trying hiking gorgeous pine and granite cliff vistas leading to an alpine lake.
Yosemite National Park
Just about seven hours drive from San Diego is the picturesque Yosemite National Park. The National Park attracts huge crowds during both summers and winters. This destination in winters resembles Narnia in its scenic beauty.
You can Ice-skate, Snowboard, and in this beautiful naturally preserved National Park.
Big Sur
In just seven hours you can drive to the Big Sur. It is the biggest weekend getaway destination within 3 hours drive from San Diego. Throughout the year Big Sur is a host to several adventurous events like local music fests, lighthouse tours, marathons, and many other events.
Big Sur is the most popular romantic weekend getaways for San Diego people.
Laguna Beach
This is my personal favorite! This seaside city in Orange County is known for its arts scene, its outdoor lifestyle, and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Laguna Beach offers something for everyone.
The surrounding area is a great place to visit for a weekend getaway anytime with a host of excellent restaurants and art galleries. The beach also boasts sunny weather for 300-plus days a year.
Mammoth Mountains
Mammoth offers mammoth opportunities to chill during a weekend. Mammoth Mountain and surrounding lakes are natural wonders in the Western US. Mammoth is just a six-hour drive from San Diego. Along the way, you will notice how the scenery changes once you reach the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Los Angeles
With a one hour drive, you can reach Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the most favorite city on the West Coast for Americans.
There are plenty of places that you can visit. Los Angeles is a city of recreational hubs and places.
You check the visual arts at Getty Center. It is the largest philanthropic center dedicated to public art.
You can visit the Griffith Observatory at Santa Monica Mountain top. While it is one of the leading public astronomy facilities in the US, it is also just as visited for the extraordinary views it offers of Downtown LA.
If you are visiting Los Angeles for a family weekend getaway, the Grove is the ideal place for you. It is an open-air mall filled with shops and eateries.
Joshua Tree
If you are a stargazer at night and often wonder why you can’t see them anymore, visit Joshua National Park and spend a night beneath the stars.
In just nine hours from you say goodbye to the Misty Smoggy skies of San Diego and fall in love with the stars yet again.
You can gaze at the incredible number of stars and constellations are visible in the night sky. The little town of Joshua Tree, located just outside the park, is filled with hippie stores, natural healers, and roadside diners.
Morro Bay
With just a little more than four hours by car from San Diego, Morro Bay is a small, quaint beachside town with a wide, curving bay and beach.
It is a getaway where there is a lot of history of Spanish missions. The small town is ideal for a calm and pleasant weekend getaway.
