Our trip around the eleven parishes of Thanet is sort of circular, and I decided after Ramsgate, the best way to go about the route was to first of all go South and then West, sweeping the Southernmost parishes first, before turning in a clockwise direction and going along the North coast of the Isle. It didn’t quite work out that way entirely, but for the most part it did, and as such, this second parish is just to the South of Ramsgate.
Located in a wonderful natural harbour flanked with chalk cliffs and having one of the country’s most important nature reserves, this village is not too big, with a population of about 1,800. It cannot grow much more either thanks to the Kent International Airport standing in its way, but really why does it need to?
The place is full of things that, if you like your history, you’ll love. First of all is the replica Viking longship – The Hugin, which takes pride of place on top of the cliff along the former A256. That same cliff gives you a pretty good view over a former hoverport which used to transport passengers from here to Calais, France before closure in 1981.
If the quiet life if what you’re after look no further than Pegwell Bay which is a country park that allows you to forget all the stresses and strains of urban life and even if you’re a resident of the village I can’t imagine it’s not handy to have such a lovely spot right on your doorstep. It’s full of protected bird species and thankfully not a lot of tourists too.
Oh, and St Augustine wouldn’t have made his trip to England without this place. He had a major role to play in what you will find in the modern day parish of CLIFFSEND.
