Berlin-Kreuzberg
Kreuzberg is a district in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough of Berlin. Until the merger with the neighboring former district Friedrichshain in the course of the administrative reform in 2001, there was an independent district Kreuzberg, which is congruent with the current district Kreuzberg. The name of the district comes from the 66-meter-high Kreuzberg in Viktoriapark.
According to the postal codes – valid until 1993 – Kreuzberg is divided into two districts, named after the numbers of the delivery post offices at that time: The larger Kreuzberg 61 (formerly: Südwest 61) and the smaller SO 36 (SO = Südost). At the time of the Berlin Wall, SO 36 was enclosed on three sides and developed an alternative culture of its own on the eastern edge of West Berlin. Kreuzberg boasts a lively night and cultural life that is known beyond the city limits. Several artists and literary institutions reside or are based in the district. Due to an ambivalent-liberal municipal policy and the tolerant attitude of part of the residents, the district Kreuzberg 36 (Görlitzer Park), is considered tolerant with regard to drug dealing and consumption.
