My boy Kim7 and I just so happened to drive by this region of Northern California, and since we had some time to kill, why not explore the abandoned Donner Pass Summit Tunnels! These tunnels are actually pretty well known, and it’s not far off the freeway (I80). However, it is at high elevation, and there are no paved roads to reach here. If you plan on checking this place out, just be prepared to do some scrambling while being out of breath.

These tunnels were built for the transcontinental railroad by in the mid 1800s, and the most dangerous parts were built by the Chinese. In 1993, the Union Pacific decided that a longer, taller tunnel would be more suitable to modern trains, and thus the Donner Pass summit tunnels were no longer in use.

Although the railroad tracks are nowhere to be seen in these tunnels, you can still enjoy the fascinating views, the creative graffiti art, and fresh air at 7000ft.
